Junior 1 & 4 County Finals - Sun, 16 May 2004 Juniors just fail to achieve Unique Football Double Just to show that it wasn?t Brigids Seniors who have been working hard all year both the Clubs Junior Football Teams reached their respective County finals this year as the club aimed for an Historic and unique football Treble. Both the Junior finals took place in O?Toole Park on Saturday 18th October and a huge Brigids crowd were there including most of the Senior panel. Our Junior 4 Football team kicked off the clubs weekend (week !!!) celebrations with a convincing victory over Liffey Gaels on a scoreline of 2-15 to 1-4 with any number of 5/6 Brigids lads in contender for man of the match. Noel (The Beard) Cassidy, Sean Cunningham and the legendary Vinny (Hawaii) Mulvanney and Paddy (pitch unplayable) Duffy had this young side in great fettle. Right from the off the Reds surged into this and some excellent points from forwards Willie O?Donnell , Mickey Gahan , Willo Corbett and Alan Beirnie put the 4?s well ahead before Gahan fed O?Donnell a great pass and Wille finished to the net to leave the lads well ahead at the break. A brief revival from Gaels saw them score a good goal but Willo the wisp Corbett snapped over 3 points from impossible angles and with Alan Hughes and Des Carolan mopping up loose the victory was never in. The Beards men fitness and ability was evident all over the pitch and the loudest cheers were kept for the introduction of subs Fred "Blood Sub" Lynam and Podge O?Reilly. Well Done to all the panel on a great League and Championship double. Our Junior Ones were gallantly beaten by favorites Lucan Sarsfields by one point in the Junior A Championship final. Duigo got Brigids off to a great start with a good opening point and Brigids should have capitalised better on some early pressure. Once Lucan settled into the game at midfield they began to exert their dominance and their nippy corner forwards were always a thorn in Mick Melletts side. Points were exchanged in a tight game and before the half time whistle and against the run of play Lucan broke down the whole field and finished the ball to the net to lead by 3 at the half. Some fresh legs on the Brigids team saw them come back into it in an exciting second half with both subs Kevin Donovan and Micka Walsh getting on the scoreboard. Lucan were always able to up a gear and should have been much further in front after some bad wides. Brigids trailed by a goal with 10 minutes left but rallied again When Brianie Donovan was fouled in the square and converted the penalty the game was there for the talking. Again Lucan midfielder Duffer won some crucial possession and fed his half forward Nulty who clinched a deserved victory for the club. Mick Mellets men never really performed to the heights they reached on a great Championship campaign which saw them beat 3 Inter sides and favorites Na Fianna. Well done to all one the panel in what was a great spirited year and the general feeling is that there is a Championship in this team yet. 2004 for Brigids Football Championship quadruple ??
