Junior 3 Match Report versus Ballyboden - Sat, 12 Jun 2004

St Brigids Junior 3 football team kept their unbeaten record in tact in the junior 3 football League. This was a top of the table clash as both teams going into this fixture were unbeaten with five wins each. It was played in Oldcourt at the foot of the Dublin mountains. It was a very competitive affair with a high standard of football.

Brigids were first to get off the mark with Willa Corbett opening the visitors account. With a well worked move. This was soon followed by a Rory McGowan point following good work from Stephen Cassidy. Brigids again scored a third to open a three point lead after Eoin Melly was fouled and Willa Corbett stroked the free over from close range. This lead was soon cut as the Southside opposition soon pounced for two quick points.

At this stage Brigids lost their full forward Alan Beirnie through injury and introduced Podge O?Reilly who made a great impact. Brigids again were next to score after good work from centre back Niall Ryan left Stephen Cassidy in the clear to score a easy point. So now at 4 points to two the game was getting very interesting. With ten minutes left in the first half Brigids Willie Tyrell was pulled down for a penalty which Podge O?Reilly slotted convincingly to the top corner. And from the kick out Kevin Bonfil fielded a great ball and gave it inside to Willa Corbett who slotted it over from wide on the left side.

However just before half time Ballyboden struck for goal after a high ball was sent into the square and ended up in the net. So at half time the score was Brigids 1-5 to Ballyboden?s 1-2. From the restart Ballyboden stepped up a gear and fired over 2 quick points to leave the narrowest of margins between the teams after 5 minutes into the second half. In the next ten minutes although Brigids dominated it was not reflected on the score board as they kicked some terrible wides. The only score from play during this period was a Willie Tyrell effort which went over the black spot to put the Brigids men two up again.

Again Ballyboden came back into with a great effort from goal, which Donal Donnely touched over the bar. So again a point between the teams. With ten minutes remaining the game started to really hot up and when Ballyboden were awarded a penalty for a foul in the square they had a chance to take the lead. However it rattled off the crossbar and Brigids went up the field and Podge O?Reilly got a great individual effort wide on the right.

However Ballyboden were not giving up and scored 2 more points to level the game with two minutes left. But some good play from Brian Smyth left Willa Corbett with a chance to take the lead which he did. This score was soon followed up with a nice point from Eoin Melly after Stephen Cassidy laid off a nice ball. Brigids hung on to win thanks to some great defending in injury time from Tony Hughes and John Duffy.

In the end it finished 1-9 to 1-7 and in a good team display from Brigids they hung on to claim the Ballyboden scalp and keep their record in tact.
