Junior Hurling Championship versus St Kevins - Sat, 12 Jun 2004

St Brigids thoroughly deserved to win this match although their domination was not reflected on the scoreboard. St Brigids dominated for long periods of this game but could not make it count where it mattered. Ciaran Plunkett had a great game and was key to all of St Brigids play. The game was played with real championship vigour with tackles flying in everywhere but the referee done a great job to control some incidents that could have easily boiled over.

St Brigids started very well and within ten minutes they had opened up a two-point gap. St Brigids were always first to every ball and the St Kevins backs were finding the St Brigids forwards tough to mark. The two opening scores were the result of two frees from Ciaran Plunkett. The frees where as a result of St Kevins giving away stupid frees for chopping and pulling back their man. The St Brigids young rear guard were coping very well with the more experienced St Kevins forward who were getting frustrated with the lack of ball. Captain David Brookes was leading by example dominating the edge of the square for St Brigids. St Brigids notched up two further points with Dec Moloney pointing from the right wing after some great interchanging play between Stephen Melly and Willa Corbett. David Smith knocked over a superb free from seventy yards to lengthen the gap to four. St Kevins were finding it hard to build any platform for an attack due to the great defensive play from the entire St Brigids team right up to the full forward line. St Brigids ended the first half four points up but they must have been disappointed with only a four point lead. They knew that St Kevins couldn?t play any worse in the second half so they would have to up their performance in the second half.

St Kevin?s made several position changes at the break and these changes seemed to reenergize the team as they came out fighting in the second half and soon registered their first score of the match. Corner forward Harry Lynch knocking over a point from an acute angle on the left wing. St Brigids replied with three further scores. Ciaran Plunkett was dominating on the sixty-five and St Brigids goalkeeper Tim O?Leary was hitting Plunkett with every puck out. St Kevin?s were powerless to stop Plunkett. The score of the game came when Plunkett soared high to pluck the ball out of the air. He soloed the ball forty yards beating several St Kevin?s backs and sweetly pointed from close range. Stephen Kelly also pointed from close range after some neat play from Keith O?Neill breaking the incoming ball into Kelly?s path to keep St Brigids in the driving seat. Ciaran Plunkett scored another free to stretch their lead to six. With ten minutes remaining St Brigids seemed to take eye off the ball as St Kevin?s scored a goal resulting from a high ball lobbed in around the square, which was smashed to net from full forward Tony Buckley. St Brigids were soon replied with match of the match Ciaran Plunkett pointing from distance to seal a well-deserved victory for St Brigids. St Kevins tagged on a late point but they were no match for this improving St Brigids side.
