U14 Hurlers versus St Vincents - Sat, 12 Jun 2004

St. Brigids 3-10 St. Vincents 1-0

This match started in glorious sunshine at Russell Park with the home team soon settling with an opening score from Daire Plunkett. Brigids were playing  free-flowing, stylish hurling throughout the opening half and had soon notched up three goals, the 1st coming from clever midfield play by Conor Woodgate, who sent an inviting ball into the edge of the square to Conor Brennan who batted it past the Vincents keeper. This was soon followed by a great ground shot from Philip Carroll at the edge of the square, which evaded the keeper?s best efforts. Jamie Winters scored a lovely point from a free shortly after and then Conor Carton sent a sublime ball from the sideline, which deceived the Vincents defence and stole into the net!

Vincents rallied well from  midfield their centre back sent a long ball into their full forward who made a great catch and, despite the best efforts of full back Eoin O? Brien and keeper Ronan Callaghan, he sent a rasping shot into the back of the net. Brigid?s weren?t phased by this and before the referee blew the half-time whistle, had notched up 5 points, a 65? from Jamie Winters and points from Brendan Roche, two from Alan McCarrick and one from Conor Woodgate following  a lovely strike by the talented midfielder. This left the half-time score 3-7 to 1-0.

With the start of the second half, the skies opened and the standard of the match deteriorated quickly. Brigids retained their dominance despite Vincent?s best efforts. An early score by midfielder Paul Clerkin showed there was to be no way back for Vincents. Alan Mc Carrick slotted over the only two other scores of the half to leave him the leading scorer of the day. All in all a good performance by the home side, and very welcome considering this was their first match after the disappointment of being piped by one point in the F?ile Final.
