Inters versus St Marys in Championship - Sat, 12 Jun 2004

St Brigids 2-10 St Mary 1-8

St Brigids entered this contest as one of the favourites for the extremely competitive Dublin Intermediate Football Championship. St Brigids started well dominating the first twenty minutes but had little to show on the scoreboard. The sides were level at 3 points apiece. St Brigids full forward line was proving a handful for St Marys. Alan Daly?s & Anthony Briody?s running off the ball was causing the St Marys defence all sorts of problems. Anthony Briody scored the pick of the points in the opening quarter of the game. Cormac Kelly fielded a high ball and then supplied a beautifully crafted ball down the right wing resulting in Anthony Briody slotting over from 35 metres. St Brigids began to dominate in midfield with Cormac Kelly playing extremely well. The St Brigids forwards began to operate as a unit and in no time, they opened up a two-point lead. Slick passages of play resulted in Peter Blessing slotting over from 21 metres and Alan Daly pointing from an acute angle on the left wing. Then came the best move of the game. Dessie Carolan fielded a high ball from the St Marys kick out and passed the ball to Cormac Kelly who in turn passed to Oirin McCann who kicked a beautiful pass that pierced the St Marys defence. Anto Briody won the ball from Oirin McCann and then passed the ball to the on running Cormac Kelly who blasted to the net. St Marys were on the ropes. Their defence was under constant pressure. St Brigids halfbacks were piling forward at any chance given. St Brigids should have finished the game off before half time when Peter Blessing kicked a sublime through ball to Brian Donavan. Brian Donavan?s shot was superbly blocked by the St Marys corner back resulting in a point for St Brigids. St Brigids led by 5 points and the break.

St Brigids were caught cold at the start of the second half. The halftime break had helped St Marys reorganise and they soon they led. St Brigids seemed dumb founded as St Marys found another gear. Slack defending in the last third of the pitch resulted in two frees for St Marys which were duly dispatched over the bar by St Marys corner forward, John Franklin. A slick passage of play resulted in a St Marys goal. St Marys won the ball in midfield and punted a high ball into the full forward line. John Franklin broke the ball to the on running Tony Mullin who placed the ball in left corner of Noel Peacocks net. St Marys were dominating in all sectors and soon led by two points with 15 minutes remaining. St Brigids then introduced Donal O?Mahony and Seamus Bonner. They also moved Craig Kilmurray to midfield. The switches seemed to add extra impedes to the St Brigids attack. Cormac Kelly found his feet again in midfield and scored the point of the game off his left foot from forty metres. St Brigids were rallying. Then came the turning in the game when Alan Daly shot from 30 metres looped over the keeper?s head into the net. St Brigids led by two and soon put daylight between the teams with Anto Briody, Seamus Bonner & Alan Daly pointing. The St Brigids management will be happy that the first hurdle has been accounted for but they know that a lot more hard work will need to be done if St Brigids are to be in the shake up come October.
