U15 Hurlers versus Crumlin - Sat, 12 Jun 2004

CRUMLIN 2 - 11     BRIGIDS  1 - 08

This U15 Division one hurling league match had the potential for a mouth-watering contest with two fine hurling sides on the pitch at Russell Park last Tuesday evening.

Brigids started well with Aodhain McEnerney opening the scoring with a point from play. From the puck out the sliothar was collected in the middle of the field and sent into the Crumlin 14 yard line where it was duly collected by the Brigids full forward Craig Healy and skilfully flipped over to the waiting Gavin Kane who sent it to rest in the Crumlin net.

With thirteen minutes gone Crumlin had registered three wides. In the meantime Brigids went on to score a further point, but Brigids domination did not last long as Crumlin found the target on the fifteenth minute and fired one over. This brought the score line to 1 -2 0 ? 1 in favour of Brigids. Following this a good sideline cut was caught by Crumlin and delivered with accuracy to give them their second point,

Crumlin were now putting their stamp on this game and went on to score a further two points one from play and one from a free. With just five minutes remaining in this half, Kevin Burke of Brigids was fouled and the subsequent free was put over by Joe Jordan, putting Brigids ahead by the minimum. Just before the whistle Crumlin scored to leave the sides level at half time on a score line of 1 - 3 to 0 - 6.

Brigids began this half in the same fashion as the first. Following a foul by Crumlin, St Brigid?s were provided with an opportunity and advantage was taken with a fine point scored by Brigid?s Jamie Winters. As play continued Brigids were scoring against the run of play while at the same time Crumlin were squandering chances with two going wide. Outstanding performances from Brigids corner back Philip Daly and full back Eoin O?Brien denied Crumlin a greater lead.

Fifteen minutes into the second half both sides were on equal terms with a score line of 1 - 6 to 0 - 9. However from here on it was Crumlin all the way and they found their target picking up the sliothar on the Brigids 21 they reached the danger line and converted superbly into the net.

Crumlin seemed to take control of centre field as Brigids found it difficult to get into the Crumlin half. Ball after ball was cut off and full use was made of this period by Crumlin who struck yet another point, a good puck out from Brigids goalkeeper James Campbell sent the sliothar to the left and was crossed by Niall Davey to Joe Jordan who took a terrific point from the 21.

Following a Brigids mistake the sliothar was swiftly delivered it up to the waiting number 11 for Crumlin who took a return pass and buried it in the net. This was the death knell for Brigids.

Following good spells of hurling in several areas of the field Brigids were unlucky not to score a goal as the sliothar just skimmed the bar for a point. Time was nearly up with less than a minute to go Crumlin scored another point. With that referee Fergus McCreevy signalled the game to a close.

This was a disappointing performance from a Brigids side that have shown they can compete with the best. But big performers were in and out of the game. This inconsistency will give cause for concern to mentors Paddy Davey, Mel McEnerney and Pat Dempsey who will be demanding great improvement from their charges.
