Junior Hurlers versus Setanta in Championship - Fri, 18 Jun 2004 St Brigids 4-8 Setanta 0-5
St Brigids started very well and within ten minutes they had opened up a four-point gap. St Brigids were always first to the ball and the Setanta backs were finding the St Brigids forwards tough to mark. Brian Hanley opened the scoring with a great individual score. Hanley ran onto a beautifully floated ball from William Corbett. Hanley turned his man and rifled the ball to the net from twenty yards. David Smith extended the lead with a beautifully lofted free from sixty free yards. St Brigids were well on top by this stage and scored a further goal. The goal resulting from great defensive play from David Brookes & Ciaran Byrne. Great hassling from Byrne broke down the Setanta attack and Brookes hit David Smith with a pinpoint accurate ball. Smith sprinted down the wing and played a beautiful cross field over the Setanta back line to the on running Noel Henry who finished the ball to the net with some aplomb. Setanta rallied and began to apply pressure on the St Brigids back line but the St Brigids young rear guard coped very well and the Setanta forwards were getting frustrated with the lack of quality ball. St Brigids weathered the Setanta period of pressure and were soon on top again. Some great interchanging play between John Dunning and Ciaran Plunkett resulted in another point for St Brigids. David Smith knocked over another superb free from seventy yards to lengthen the gap to eight points. Setanta kept on fighting but could not register a score due to the persistent hassling and pressure from the St Brigids defence. St Brigids finished the half very strong and scored a further three points. Brian Hanley pointed from an acute angle after breaking through two tackles. Stephen Quigley pointed from thirty yards after a great run from the sixty-five. Ciaran Plunkett added another point to the St Brigids tally, striking the ball over from distance. St Brigids ended the first half with a comfortable lead but the platform for the lead was due to the great defensive play from all players on the team, never allowing Setanta to settle. Setanta introduced several subs at the break and they were soon on the scoreboard after some neat play from Gary Long. Setanta tagged on another two points within minutes and began to regain their confidence but St Brigids responded with another goal. Ali Waters blocked down Setanta centre back John Roger and sprinted clear to finish the ball to the net from the tightest of angles. St Brigids regained their composure and this began to show as they added two further points. Noel Henry lofted the ball over the bar from fourteen yards after some neat attacking play from Aidan O?Leary. Ciaran Plunkett registered his third point of the game from forty yards. Plunkett won the ball superbly from Tim O?Leary?s puckout. St Brigids clinically killed the game off when Brian Hanley capped a great performance with a well-taken goal from close range. Setanta responded with two late points but they were not going to deny St Brigids the win, which they thoroughly deserved.
