St Brigids deservedly won this Miller Shield Cup encounter but were made work very hard for their victory. The game had an extra edge to it due to the fact that St Brigids knocked St Maurs out of the Junior Hurling Championship earlier this year. St Maurs, unbeaten since that Championship encounter top the Miller Shield Group table but if beaten by St Brigids, both teams would share the top spot.

St Brigids played against a very stiff breeze in the first half and knew that they would be doing well to be within a few points of St Maurs at the break. St Maurs started the better of the two sides looking the sharper.  St Maurs were first to the sliotar and were winning the majority of the breaks in the midfield sector. Although St Maurs started the better of the two sides, St Brigids missed several opportunities to build up an early lead and St Maurs punished St Brigids for their early misses. St Maurs fired over three quick points to lead by three after fifteen minutes.  St Brigids seemed stunned but soon found their feet. Their solid back line began to get to grips with the St Maurs forwards and the St Brigids half back line began to launch attack upon attack. Centre half back John Dunning leading by example with his trademark runs through the centre of the St Maurs defence. St Brigids forwards were very clinical and their movement spread-eagled the St Maurs defence at times when supplied with quality ball.  St Brigids registered their first score of the game after 18 minutes when David Smith fired over a free from the left wing. The free as a result of good work from skilful nippy centre forward Seamus Lynam. The St Brigids midfield pairing of William Corbett & David Smith started to get a foothold in the centre of the field. St Brigids within minutes reduced St Maurs lead to minimum when Neil Plunkett fired over a point after a mazy piercing run right through the centre of the St Maurs defence. This score gave St Brigids renewed confidence and they really knuckled down to the task and were soon rewarded for their hard work. Neil Plunkett scoring a goal from distance after some slick running from centre-back John Dunning. St Maurs responded with a late point to leave one point between the sides at the break. St Brigids the happier of the sides after playing against a very stiff breeze.

St Brigids started the second half very well and within five minutes they had opened up a three-point gap. David Smith rifled over another trademark sixty-five and the introduction of Stephen Kelly yielded dividends immediately as Kelly pointed from close range. St Maurs responded immediately and registered their only score of the second half when Neil Roche pointed from distance. St Maurs began to dominate but the St Brigids reliable defence withstood St Maurs period of pressure. The St Brigids forwards repaid their backs reliability when Paul Sheedy showed great skill to fire over from close range. St Brigids introduced several substitutes at this state to reenergize their hard working side. Colm O?Brien adding extra steel to the St Brigids defence. St Maurs frustration began to show as they gave away several frees and David Smith punished St Maurs for their lack of discipline as he fired over two long range frees. Neil Plunkett also got in on the act as he rifled over two quick points to ensure victory over a spirited St Maurs team.
