Inter Hurlers versus St Finnians of Swords - Mon, 19 Jul 2004
ST. BRIGID?S 5-11 ST. FINNIAN?S 1-6
A powerful performance from the Junior hurlers of St. Brigid?s proved too much for St. Finnian?s at Russell Park last Wednesday night as the hosts thrashed their opponents in this championship clash.
Brigid?s tore into their opponents from the outset, and the game was effectively over as a contest by half-time as goals from Willie Tyrell, Mickey O?Sullivan and Morgan Fitzsimons helped them to a 3-6 to 1-3 lead at the short whistle.
And things didn?t improve for Finnian?s in a lacklustre second period, as the hosts pulled further clear and ran out impressive seventeen-point victors, with Maurice Dunne and Stephen Kelly also finding the net.
Brigid?s signalled their intentions from the first whistle, and took the lead after just sixty seconds when Tyrell?s long-range effort found the net even though the Finnian?s goalkeeper got a strong hurl to the shot.
It was all Brigid?s in the ensuing ten minutes as, with the diamond of Sean O?Sullivan, Tyrell, Tommy Fitzsimons and O?Sullivan sweeping up all the breaking ball in midfield, they moved 1-3 to 0-1 clear through a brace of points from the superb Mickey O?Sullivan and a score from Dunne.
To their credit, Finnian?s kept plugging away, and were rewarded with a goal of their own that reduced Brigid?s advantage to two points after a quarter of an hour.
But that proved to be simply a brief respite for the visitors, and Brigid?s upped the tempo once again to lead by 3-5 to 1-1 on 25 minutes as Mickey O?Sullivan and Fitzsimons took advantage of some extremely poor defending to find the net before Mickey O?Sullivan and Tyrell dissected the uprights.
With such a commanding lead, Brigid?s relaxed somewhat up to the turn, but Finnian?s couldn?t capitalize on the hosts? lacklustre play and missed two penalties, leaving the Russell Park outfit with a nine-point half-time advantage (3-6 to 1-3).
Just as in the first half, Brigid?s resumed in determined fashion, and pulled further clear when Dunne blasted to the roof of the Finnian?s net on 34 minutes.
With the likes of Tyrell and Mickey O?Sullivan now thoroughly enjoying themselves, the hosts hit four unanswered points in the following fifteen minutes, with Tyrell (2), Fitzsimons and Declan Markey registering the scores (4-10 to 1-3).
The game was now long over as a contest, although Finnian?s set about putting some respectability on the scoreboard and closed the gap through three points in succession.
Such was Brigid?s advantage that they could afford the luxury of goalkeeper Alan Nolan taking the frees, before substitute Rory Smith pointed to leave the hosts 4-11 to 1-6 clear.
They weren?t finished yet, however, and Kelly hit a fine goal in stoppage time to complete the rout.
