Junior 1's versus Garda - Sun, 15 Aug 2004

St Brigids 4-16 Garda 2-6

Brigids went top of Junior One League as they comprehensively beat Garda
yesterday on a scoreline of 4-16 to 2-6. Garda opened the scoring but
Brigids bounced right back when the speedy Micka Walsh was taken down inside
the box and Dave Fitzgerald cooly slotted home the resulting penalty. The
game then turned into a Baxter and McGuinness double act.

Brigids won everything around the middle through Vinny Bruen, Jonnie Baxter,
Diarmuid Reidy and Brian McGuinness . Baxter was in inspirational form
notching 1-5 and McGuinness and Fitzgerald weren't too far behind with 1-4
and 1-3 respectively. Young Lorcan McCarthy was always dangerous and he got
two classy points in the second half . Co-manager Donie Quinn was in great
mood as he led his team back to the Roselawn for some refreshments after"we
set out at the start of the year with the League as our priority, anything
extra would be a bonus. To be top at this stage is satisfying but we've a a
lot of hard work ahead yet.. We still have to play favourites Kilmacud and
Round Towers , Clondalkin , and both of those while a point behind us have a
game in hand. This will go right down the to final games. As I said at the
start it's all about the squad. At our first meeting this year we had 30
lads down and a lot of people were saying we were crazy having that many but
its worked in our favour . We have 3- 4 serious long term injuries and with
lads on holiday and exams we have used all 30 so far. Our two defeats have
been by a point and it shows the character of this panel that we have
rebounded strongly from that."

St Brigids: K O'Donovan, C Kelly , S Downey, M Furlong, E Lynch, V Bruen, D Dempsey, J
Baxter (1-5), D Reidy (0-1), M Walsh , D Fitzgerald (1-3), L McCarthy (0-2), S McCarthy, C
McFaul (0-1) B McGuinness (1-4).

Subs E Brady (1-0) for S McCarthy, A Lynch for M Furlong, M MCGovern for E Lynch.
