U-14 Hurlers versus Kilmacud Crokes - Sun, 5 Sep 2004

St Brigids 1-5 Kilmacud Crokes 0-4

A predatory goal from Jamie Winters helped the U-14 hurlers of St. Brigid’s remain in with a shout of winning their league title after a tight affair with Kilmacud Crokes last Thursday night.

The outcome was in the balance as Crokes led by 0-4 to 0-3 after 45 minutes at Russell Park, but the turning point arrived seconds later as Winters got a hurl to Paul Clerkin’s long free and directed the sliotar to the net.

The hosts never looked back thereafter, and pulled further clear through points from Daragh Plunkett and Alan McCarrick to run out four points winners and move into second place in their league table.

It was clear that the Saints would have a battle on their hands from the outset, as Crokes led by 0-1 to 0-0 after ten minutes despite the fact that the home team had enjoyed the lion’s share of the possession.

Nevertheless, Brigid’s remained undeterred and, as the likes of McCarrick, Eoin O’Brien, Conor Woodgate and Phillip Carroll began to stamp their authority on proceedings, the hosts fought back to lead by 0-3 to 0-1 after twenty minutes.

Clerkin opened the Saints’ account with a wonderful point from long-range, before Carroll displayed tremendous skill to flick the sliotar over his markers head before dissecting the uprights.

And it got better for the Russell Park outfit ten minutes from the break, as McCarrick put the hosts two points clear with his first score of the game.

However, Brigid’s fell asleep in the dying stages of the half, and a brace of Kilmacud points left the sides locked at 0-3 apiece after an uninspiring first half.

The visitors continued from where they’d left off after the restart to lead by 0-4 to 0-3 midway through the second half, although Brigid’s would have been further behind if it weren’t for some splendid defending from players such as Winters, O’Brien and Jeff Mullins.

The game’s defining moment arrived soon after, when Winters showed superb awareness to find the net and leave Brigid’s in control.

Crokes tried to respond thereafter, but were denied time and time again as the Brigid’s midfield and defence in particular worked extremely hard to hang onto their slender advantage.

Plunkett, who’d been enjoying a fine game at full-forward, then relieved some of the pressure on the hosts with a pointed free six minutes from time, leaving the Saints three points to the good (1-4 to 0-4).

And any lingering doubts over the game’s outcome were dispelled in the dying seconds, as McCarrick claimed his second point of the game to leave Brigid’s four points clear and seal the win.
