Minor A Footballers versus Ballyboden St Enda's in Championship 1st Round - Tue, 14 Sep 2004 St Brigids 1-13 Ballyboden St Enda's 4-4 The minor footballers of St. Brigid's and Ballyboden St. Enda's will have to do it all over again after this cracking championship encounter ended all square at Russell Park. Both teams contributed to an absorbing clash on Monday night, as this open game was littered with fine skills and impressive goals throughout. In the finish, Brigid's probably felt the more aggrieved at the final outcome, as they dominated for long periods and would have progressed had it not been for some sloppy defending that contributed to Boden?s goals. But in spite of that slackness in front of their own goal, the hosts still looked set to progress when leading by four points with two minutes of normal time remaining (1-13 to 3-3). Nevertheless, 'Boden were in dogged form, and displayed that grit and determination once again in the dying stages as a Scott Kinevan goal helped them force a draw. There was under a minute to play when Kinevan received the ball fifteen yards out, and the ?Boden forward struck a fine low shot to the net to pull the Knocklyon boys level. That was Kinevan's second goal, with Cian Hiney the younger brother of Stephen also grabbing a brace for the visitors, while Eoin Maguire found the net in fine fashion for Brigid?s. Brigid's looked the superior team throughout the opening half, and led by 0-8 to 2-0 at the interval as the likes of Killian O'Dea, Pauric Kelly and Maguire stood out. O'Dea was the main man for the hosts as he posted 0-5 in the first half, while midfielder Kelly capped a fine display with two uplifting points and Maguire also dissected the uprights. The diamond of Brigid's were also in superb form, as players such as Cillian McCann and Robert Fitzgerald mopped up most of the breaking ball in midfield to ensure that the Brigid's forwards received plentiful possession. But to their credit, 'Boden remained in contention, as first Hiney bundled home after ten minutes before Kinevan memorably shot to the net in first-half stoppage time. Brigid's upped the tempo in the opening ten minutes of the second half, and raced into a 0-11 to 2-1 led through scores from O'?Dea (2) and Colm Curtin, while the midfield of Fitzgerald and Kelly worked tirelessly and the likes of McCann, Phillip Kelly and Colin Lynch stood firm in the half-back line. But the topsy-turvy nature of the game didn?t relent, and ?Boden pulled level at 3-2 to 0-11 midway through the half, with Hiney producing a superb finish to the far corner of the Brigid?s net for his second goal. 'Boden now looked to have all the momentum, before Maguire found the net just when Brigid?s needed it most to leave the hosts three points up with ten minutes remaining (1-11 to 3-2). And it got better for the Russell Park outfit in the ensuing moments, as points from O'Dea and Maguire left them four points up with two minutes to play (1-13 to 3-3). There was to be one final twist, however, and ?Boden fought back once again as Kinevan?s last-ditch goal ensured that the teams will have to do it all over again.
