U16 Hurlers versus Parnells in Championship Semi-Final - Sat, 25 Sep 2004

St Brigids 2-12 Parnells 0-5

Impressive goals from Fergal Counihan and John Cussen eased St. Brigid's to a comfortable victory over Parnells in this U-16 Hurling Championship semi-final at Russell Park.

The hosts looked in control from the outset on Saturday morning, and in the finish recorded a convincing thirteen-point win over their Collinstown opponents.

Counihan's goal pushed the hosts clear in the final five minutes of the first half, as the wing-forward shot to the far corner of the Parnells net after a goalmouth scramble.

And John Cussen virtually ended the game as a contest seven minutes from time, by blasting across the Parnells goalkeeper to put the hosts 2-10 to 0-4 up.

The Russell Park outfit didn't take long to settle into the contest and, as the likes of Michael Cussen, Daniel Brady, Thomas Nolan and Joe Jordan mopped up in the middle of the pitch, the home side led by 0-3 to 0-1 after twenty minutes, with Jordan claiming all three points.

Brigid's should have been further clear, but some poor finishing by their forwards prevented them from reflecting their dominance on the scoreboard.

Nevertheless, Jordan was thoroughly enjoying himself at centre-half forward, and grabbed two more superb points to leave his team 0-5 to 0-1 after 25 minutes.

Counihan claimed Brigid's first goal seconds later, which he did by sweeping to the far corner of the Parnells net after several shots had been blocked.

The teams then swapped points in the dying stages of the half, leaving Brigid's 1-6 to 0-3 clear at the short whistle.

The Saints continued to dominate in the opening fifteen minutes of the second half, as Brady (2) and Niall Davies both split the uprights to put Brigid's nine points clear.

To their credit, Parnells refused to buckle and piled forward in the ensuing ten minutes, but the Brigid's half-back line of Kevin Burke, Michael Cussen and Aodan McInerney were on top form and restricted the Collinstown boys to just one point, which was cancelled out by Phillip Brogan moments later (1-10 to 0-4).

And Brigid's sealed the win with seven minutes remaining, as John Cussen displayed tremendous predatory instincts to shoot to the far corner and leave the hosts twelve points clear.

The teams swapped points in the dying stages, but the game was now over as a contest and in the end Brigid's eased to a convincing win.
