Inter Footballers versus O'Dwyers in League Clash - Sat, 9 Oct 2004 St Brigids 2-8 O'Dwyers 0-4 Goals in each half from Oran McCann and Michael Gahan were enough to ease St. Brigid's to a comprehensive ten-point victory over O'Dwyer's in this Intermediate Football League clash at Russell Park. McCann brilliantly netted just eight minutes into last Saturday evening's clash, while Gahan virtually sealed the win for the hosts five minutes after the restart by rolling home following a goalmouth scramble. From the outset, there was little or no doubt over which team would emerge victorious, as Brigid's looked the classier outfit throughout and comfortably defeated their Balbriggan opponents without ever hitting top gear. The writing was on the wall for O'Dwyer's from an early stage and, after Gahan had opened the scoring with an impressive point in the seventh minute, McCann found the top left hand corner of the net with a brilliant curling shot from fifteen yards out. O'Dwyer's came more into the contest in the following exchanges, but Brigid's looked in control throughout and led by 1-3 to 0-3 after twenty minutes following scores from Seamus Bonner and Dessie Carolan. But in truth, the standard of the contest was extremely poor as both teams freely added to their wides count, although a strong breeze was making for some difficult conditions. It was O'Dwyer's who finished the half the stronger, and a further score from the Balbriggan men left the hosts just two points up at the short whistle (1-3 to 0-4). However, Brigid's pulled clear five minutes after the restart, as Gahan slotted to an empty net after John Baxter's original effort had been saved. That effectively ended O'Dwyers' resistance, and Brian Donavan and Craig Kilmurray both dissected the uprights to leave the Russell Park boys 2-6 to 0-4 clear with ten minutes remaining. The Brigid's midfield of Carolan and Cormac Kelly were now well on top, whilst others such as Andrew Farrell at centre-half back and John Quinn at full-back prevented the O'Dwyer's attack from finding any joy. And the hosts pulled further clear in the dying stages, as points from Carolan and the impressive Bonner left them 2-8 to 0-4 clear. Try as they did, O'Dwyer's now had little or nothing to offer, and the Saints played out time to record a comfortable ten-point victory. Scorers: St. Brigid's: M Gahan, O McCann 1-1 each, C Kelly 0-3, S Bonner 0-2, B Donavan 0-1.
