St Brigids U21 made an early exit from the U21 Hurling Championship after a hard fought tussle with Kilmacud Crokes. This was a clash of the Hurling heavy weights as both teams were ear marked as potential winners of the championship. The game was played in Silver Park at the foot of the Dublin Mountains. It was a very competitive affair with a high standard of hurling on show.
Kilmacud won the toss and decided to play with the wind in the first half. Quite a sizeable lead would be needed for Crokes if they were to win this match. Kilmacud opened the match at blistering pace and the young St Brigids side found it hard to get a foothold in the game. Kilmacud were first to get off the mark with John Devine opening the home sides account with a well-worked move. A Pat Short point soon followed this after a superb block from Frank Ryan in midfield. Ryan turning defence into attack. Kilmacud again scored a third to open a three-point lead after John Fahy was fouled and Pat Short stroked the free over from close range. This lead was soon cut as Brigids soon pounced for two quick points. Brendan McInerney pointing from the right wing after some great interchanging play between Willie Tyrell and Willa Corbett. David Smith knocked over a superb free from fifty-five yards to cut Kilmacud?s lead to one point.
Kilmacud responded immediately and fire over three unanswered points to lengthen their lead to four. Kilmacud were winning every fifty-fifty ball in midfield and the St Brigids defence was under severe pressure. The Brigids full back line were outstanding, hooking and blocking their opponents especially corner back JD Mulcahy. Brigids soon responded to the Kilmacud onslaught and began to eat away at the Kilmacud lead. Brigids responded in tremendous fashion to cut Kilmacud lead to one point at the break. Keith Morris rifling over 21 yards. Morris rising highest to pick the sliotar from the air and slot it over the bar. With ten minutes left in the first half Brigids Willie Tyrell was pulled down for a free, which Paddy McAvenue slotted convincingly over the bar. And from the puck out Keith Fox fielded a great ball and gave it inside to Paddy McAvenue who slotted it over from wide on the left side. Brigids were the happier at the break, only one behind with a strong wind aiding their cause in the second half.
From the restart Brigids stepped up a gear and fired over two quick points to leave one point between the sides. In the next ten minutes although Brigids dominated it was not reflected on the scoreboard as they hit some terrible wides. Kilmacud capitalised on St Brigids wides by firing in two quick goals in the space of five minutes. Kilmacud added further points to leave six points between the sides. Brigids were dumb founded but the fight back began with Paddy McAvenue rifling over a free from sixty yards. Brigids struck for goal within minutes, full forward O?Mahony pulling on a high ball to the net. The game was in the melting pot. Brigids had Kilmacud under severe pressure but could not capitalise. Crokes fired over another point to ensure victory. Brigids would have to be disappointed because this was a match that they could have won but all is not lost as thirteen of the starting fifteen are still eligible for next years championship.
