International Camogie Competition held at Russell Park - Sun, 10 Oct 2004 St Brigids grounds at Russell Park in Castleknock were the venue for day two of the International Camogie Competition. The competition is a first in the history of camogie and was chosen to run in accordance with the Comprised Rules series that will conclude this Sunday at GAA headquarters in Coke Park. Coca-cola who sponsors both the competitions have developed the International Camogie Competition to co-inside with the centenary celebrations of Cumann Camoga?ochta na nGael. The first of the three games took place in Parnell Park on Thursday afternoon where Britain eased to a comfortable victory over the United States on a score-line of 5-9 to 2-3. The games continued at Russell Park on Friday afternoon where both visiting teams faced strong competition from the Irish squad. The Irish team featured many well-known camogie names selected from third level colleges across Ireland and were put through their paces by All-Ireland hurling medallist Michael Cleary, who also guided the senior Tipperary camogie squad to three All-Ireland titles in a row. The Irish team had no difficulty in displaying their superiority to the US side and raced into a 1-5 to 0-0 score line in the opening twenty minutes. Therese Maxwell opened the scoring for Ireland and was quickly assisted by team-mate Maresa Flanagan who added three points in quick succession. The first score from the US came from corner-forward Catherine Burke representing the San Francisco Shamrocks. Despite their difficulty in registering scores the US proved themselves a very capable side with Rosie O?Reilly for the US almost registering two goals within thirty seconds however Irish goalkeeper Aoife Murray took control and cleared the Americans attempts. The Irish squad finished the half the stronger on a score-line of 1-10 to 0-1 following a stylish goal from Yvonne Carney of Tullamore. The visitors were unable to pull back the huge gap in scores during the second half but managed two goals to add some respectability to the contest. Nuala McGowan and Susan Nolan took the USA?s second half scores but couldn?t seem to compete with the green and gold who added another five goals during the second period of play. The Irish team emerged victors on the devastating score-line of 6-22 to 2-2. Both the British and US teams were hosted in St. Brigids clubhouse for the afternoon before heading to Na Fianna?s grounds in Mobhi Road for an evening reception. The international competition concluded in Croke Park on Sunday afternoon where the Irish girls emerged overall victors of the competition after an unmerciful win over Britain 10-18 to 1-3. The competition looks set to become an annual event following the success and interest in the games during the last week.
