U14 Footballers defeat St Sylvester's in League Clash - Sat, 27 Nov 2004

St Brigid's 2-7 St Sylvester's 0-10

This was an exciting game with much at stake for both teams. Brigid's were apprehensive facing into this game with 4 first team players absent due to injury and other factors.

A win for Brigid's should secure their place in the  top flight for next year and for Sylvester's a defeat would place them precariously close to relegation to division 2. No surprise then that both teams went at it hammer and tongs from the outset.

Sylvester's started strong, scoring 3 points in quick succession though they also had 4 wides which were to prove costly later. A goal against the run of play by Eoin O'Brien kept Brigid's within striking distance at half time. By then Sylvester's had scored 2 more points to give them a 0-5 to 1-0 lead at half time.  Highlights of the first half were excellent defending by the St Brigid's rear guard of Cathal Doyle, Alan McCarrick & Geoff Mullins as well as some fine mid field play from Niall Myron and Jack Chambers who is rapidly returning to form after a long layoff through injury earlier in the year.

Both teams regrouped during half time and a lively 2nd half seemed in prospect. Seam Murray who is growing in stature as the season goes on opened the scoring for Brigid's with a fine point from play that settled the nerves. This was followed by an Eoin O'Brien point from play and a Conor Brennan point from a free to put Brigid's into a one point lead.

Sylvester's replied with a quick point to make it level ad shortly afterwards scored again to put them one ahead. At this stage the St Brigid's team were forced to dig team and their determination was rewarded with a point from Paul Clerkin and another excellent goal from Eoin O'Brien who is rapidly becoming a one man strike force. Sylvester?s hit back with 2 more points, one from play and one diverted over the post by Jamie Winters who had another fine game between the posts.

St Brigid's were now 1 point ahead with ten minutes remaining and it was anyone?s game. However as the final whistle drew close Cian Mullen stood up and was counted. He scored 3 fine points from play on the trot all of them from play and under serious pressure from a valiant Sylvester's defence who gave their all in an exciting finale. Sylvester hit back with a point and as the final whistle blew Brigid's ran out winners with 3 points to spare on a scoreline of 2-7 to 10 points.

There were excellent performances throughout the Brigid's team and players like D?ire Plunkett, Conor Brennan and Ryan McEnernin all put in solid performances however the man of the match award for this game (in this writer's opinion) must go to Cian Mullen for his 2nd half performance which was dogged, determined and delivered 3 fantastic points to seal the victory.
