U14 Footballers versus Erins Isle - Mon, 6 Dec 2004

Erins Isle 1-9 St Brigids 1-5

With the season drawing rapidly to a close this was a match which on the face of it had little at stake for Brigid's who had already secured their place in the top stream for next year. For Isles however, it was a totally different matter,  Just two points behind league leaders Ballyboden a win would ensure them a play off for league honours. A leisurely stroll in the park for Isles seemed on the cards as the teams lined up in a less than balmy (freezing more like)! Russell Park on Saturday afternoon last.

The script was torn up right from the start with an opening quarter that was as fierce and intense as any championship encounter. The larger Isles team tore into Brigid's from the whistle but far from capitulating the Brigid's lads dug deep, played with fire and determination and responded as if their very lives depended on it. A goal from D?ire Plunkett put Brigid's into an early lead though Isles, led as always by the superb Lorcan Siwale scored three points in reply to level the score. Three more fine points from Eoin O'Brien and two more from Isles meant that as the whistle blew for half time that Brigid's were slightly ahead by 1-3 to 5 points.

The 2nd half produced more of the same with the struggle at mid-field between Lorcan and Niall Myron reaching epic proportions as they chased every ball to the death. Playing up hill against the wind in the 2nd half it was always going to be tougher for the Brigid?s team and so it proved as Isles pointed several times from frees given away by an over worked and under pressure defence. Cathal Doyle, Alan McCarrick and Ryan McEnernen battled to the end and never gave up and with 10 minutes remaining Brigid?s trailed by the narrowest of margins. In the dying minutes Isles gained the upper hand and scored 3 points without reply to run out winners by 4 points a margin which even they would admit flattered just a little.

This was an uncompromising game, which left many with aching limbs afterwards but it was played in a good spirit and these two teams will relish meeting again over the coming season
