Inter Footballers successfully defend Loving Cup defeating Garristown - Mon, 12 Dec 2005

Loving Cup Final

St Brigid's: 1-11 Garristown: 1-10

The intermediate footballers of St Brigid's cemented a perfect year on the playing fields adding to their championship title they also claimed another piece of silverware for the cabinet at Russell Park with a one point victory over Garristown under-lights at Sean Moore Park last week. Despite two early points from Garristown Brigid's quickly found their feet when Seamus Bonar pointed ten minutes into the half.  Alan Daly added to the Brigid's tally minutes later to bring the sides level mid-way through the first half. Warren Finnegan added a goal and a point in the ensuing period of play leaving the Saints well ahead of their opponents who they out-classed in all sectors of the field.  An additional three points were registered before half-time with two from Michael Gahan and Seamus Bonar leaving the Saints comfortably ahead at the interval on a score-line of 1-6 to 0-3.

The second half proved a dramatic affair with a total of forty minutes stoppage time following a shoulder injury to the Garristown goal-keeper. After play resumed Brigid's continued to dominate the passage of play leading to three scores from Liam Kane, Bonar and Conor Ryan. Garristown regained some ground with a trio of scores, two from frees in the ensuing minutes and the Brigid's lead looked to be in danger nearing the end of the second period of play. Seamus Bonar kept Brigid's ahead with five minutes to go leaving the sides 1-11 to 0-10 points apart.  The Saints' hopes were rattled in the closing stages as Garristown managed a goal to leave just the minimum between the sides. However Brigid's sheer determination and work rate prevailed with Noel Peacock, Dermot Reidy and Dermot Cahill defending resolutely.

The final whistle sounded following a short passage of injury time leaving Brigid's captain Craig Kilmurray to claim their second cup of the year on  a final score-line of 1-11 to 1-10. The intermediate footballers celebrations were short-lived as they faced Garristown again on Sunday morning in the Division three League. The saints proved themselves worthy county and cup champions emerging victorious. This crucial League win still leaves the Brigid's second team in contention for League honours which would result in a trio of titles for these Super Saints in 2005.
