St Brigid's  5-10 Round Towers 1-11

After last weeks frantic hurling match it was back to football this week and Round Towers, newly promoted for 2005 were on their first visit of the year to Russell Park. Brigid?s fielded a strong team with everyone available including Cathal Doyle returning after a long layoff with a wrist injury.

Uphill and facing into a strong wind St Brigid's started slowly. Two points to Towers commenced proceedings with a reply by Philip Carroll, a repost by Towers and another point by Paul Clerkin and so it continued for most of the first half. Nip and Tuck it was until Philip Carroll scored the first of this weeks goals en route to yet another hat trick performance. Carroll the very same player who scored a hat trick last Sunday in a hurling match. Near misses from Eoin O Brien and a 21 yard free for Towers ensured that the match was close right up to half time. Great defending from Alan McCarrick and Niall Myron kept Round Towers at bay and at half time the teams went in with Brigid's holding the narrowest of leads on a score-line of 1-5 to 7 points.

The 2nd half started off at a hectic pace. A point from Cian Mullins, another from Daire Plunkett and a goal from the same Daire Plunkett saw Brigid's stretch their lead further. Both sides now went at it with a vengeance and three goals within 5 minutes, one for towers and two for Philip Carroll defined the 2nd half. One of the towers players was sent off and this gave Brigid's the chance to play Alan McCarrick as a sweeper at the rear and from there on the result was never in doubt. Towers fought bravely to the final whistle but late points from Daire Plunkett, and Philip Carroll ensured a comfortable win for Brigid?s on a final score of 5-10 to 1-11.

A short break from football follows now with the U15 hurling championship taking stage for the next few weeks and some great games in prospect from this fine squad of players.
