Junior 8 Footballers ease past Cabinteely in Championship - Wed, 25 May 2005

St Brigids 3-27 Cabinteely 2-2

St Brigids Junior 8 Footballers extended their impressive run of form by easily defeating a poor Cabinteely team in the 1st Round of the Championship. Cabinteely were no match for the league toppers whose superior fitness and movement off the ball was a constant thorn in the Cabinteely side. Cabinteely were very disappointing and seemed to lack any real passion for a game of such importance. St Brigids expected a very tough game but the game was over after twenty minutes when St Brigids lethal forwards tore Cabinteely's defence to shreds with a quick fire goal followed by six points.

Cabinteely started the game brightly opening the scoring within thirty seconds of the throw in. This point seemed to kick start St Brigids into motion as they quickly replied with a free from impressive corner forward Kenny Reilly who notched up 0-8 in total. St Brigids two man full forward line consisting of Kenny Reilly and Donal Fahey was causing all sorts of problems for the Cabinteely defence. St Brigids added further scores in quick succession with Keith Morris pointing after some great work from John Dunning and midfield workhorse Keith Fox. Fox winning the ball in midfield and finding David Smyth in space who played a beautifully angled ball into the corner for Morris who easily turned his man to fire over from close range. St Brigids domination on the field soon registered on the score board when Donal Fahey ran onto a broken ball in the Cabinteely fullback line to blast the ball past the on rushing Cabinteely keeper. St Brigids added another point within minutes when Stan Kevlehan lopped the ball over the bar from close range after Neil Plunkett supplied Kevlehan with a sublime cross-field pass. St Brigids were scoring a will and Cabinteely had no answer for this well drilled St Brigids team.

St Brigids continually exploited Cabinteely's frailty in their full back line as they constantly placed angled balls into the corners for full forwards Kenny Reilly and Donal Fahey. Reilly and Fahey were scoring at will and Fahey added three further points to his first half tally of 1-3. Cabinteely had no answer to Reilly and Fahey who were roasting their markers. Enda Brady scoring the pick of the points. Brady ran onto to a well-placed ball from hard working half forward David Smyth. Brady collected the ball on the end line and easily brushed aside his marker to point. Reilly also added two further points to his tally as St Brigids upped the tempo further. Sean Sweeney finished off the St Brigids scoring spree for the first half when he lofted the ball over the ball after midfielder Keith Fox jumped highest to win the Cabinteely kick out. Fox supplied on running forward Sweeney with a well-placed ball and Sweeney had the simplest of tasks to finish the move. Cabinteely responded with a late goal to finish the half trailing by eleven points on a score-line of 1-12 to 1-1. Cabinteely had no answer for the St Brigids forward line who impressed with slick passages of play and impressive off the ball running which paved the way for some clinically taken scores.

St Brigids started the second half as they finished the first when Keith Fox won the throw in and passed the ball to Enda Brady who slotted over 30 metres on his right foot. St Brigids superior fitness began to show as they constantly attacked with their half back line supporting an already on top forward line. Wingbacks Brian Kelly and David Smyth attacking at any given-moment. Brady scored Brigid's second goal within minutes of the throw-in. Brady ran onto a fisted pass from Stan Kevlehan and gave the Cabinteely keeper no chance as he blasted the ball to the left corner of the net to push St Brigids further ahead. St Brigids forward line really was motoring as Reilly, Morris and Fahey added further points to their impressive tallies. St Brigids introduced several subs at this stage but they didn't weaken the team any further. St Brigids finished the game as strong as they started to win this match deservedly. St Brigids now aim to go one better than last year & win the championship after been narrowly defeated in the Final last year.
