Ladies Minor Footballers defeat Kilmacud in League Clash - Wed, 1 Jun 2005
St.Brigids 2-10 Kilmacud Crokes 2-5 Travelling to Kilmacud Crokes gave this game a certain edge having been beaten by Crokes in last years Minor championship final .Due to exams ,study and injuries St.Brigids could only manage to field thirteen players. It was a decision not taken to lightly by their mentor Derek Molloy whether or not to travel but without further hesitation they arrived in Pairc de Burca and arrive they did. St.Brigids started the second half at a great tempo with some marvelous work in midfield by Aine Burke who switched from full forward to midfield in the absence of Colleen Barrett supported by Noelle Healy, Aimee Molloy (capt), and some good link up play by Shona Barrett. The home team were not able to cope with the constant attacking play by St.Brigids who at times looked as if they had the surplus players. Colleen Barrett rejoined the game more determined leading to a superb solo run weaving through the Crokes defence and slamming the ball into the net past the oncoming goalkeeper. St.Brigids had a goal disallowed after some great link up play by Louise Prior, Shona Barrett and Aine Burke who scored but was deemed to be inside the square when she received the pass. Resulting in a poor kick out from the Crokes keeper the ball was sent back in towards goal where Aine Burke made a clean catch and popped it over the bar. Kilmacud replied almost immediately and scored a point. Tara Carolan found Noelle Healy from the resulting kick out where she ran and by-passed several defenders en-route smashing in a shot from twenty metres into the top corner of the Kilmacud net. St.Brigids defended with all the grit and determination resulting in a foul inside the area with the referee awarding the home side a penalty kick without any hesitation. To cap off a superb display between the posts Tara Carolan made a terrific save rebounding to the incoming Crokes players only to hit it harmlessly wide. Constant pressure from the home team rewarded them with a scrappy goal after some heroic defending. However it was too little too late, the day belonged to St.Brigids, thirteen girls who played with desire, passion and pride in the famous red and white. St Brigids: T.Caralon, D.Murphy, M.Hayden, A.Duffy, C.Lynch, A.Molloy, L.Prior, C.Barrett, N.Healy, S.Barrett, L.Deasy, A.Burke, S.Lally Half-Time: St Brigids 0-6 Kilmacud Crokes 1-4 |
