J9 Footballers defeat St Oliver Plunketts in Local Derby - Sat, 9 Jul 2005

St Brigids 2-5 St Oliver Plunketts 1-3

A well-taken goal from replacement Eoin Kennedy midway through the second half paved the way for a comfortable win over local rivals St. Oliver Plunkett's last Wednesday night. The hosts led by 1-4 to 1-1 after 42 minutes of this blah blah clash, before Kennedy found himself in acres of room in front of the Plunkett's goal and clinically toe-picked home to put clear daylight between the teams.

Plunkett's rallied somewhat in the final stages, but it was to no avail as the Brigid's defence and particularly the half-back line of Conal Moore, Gerry Byrne and Keith Coleman stood firm, and the Russell Park crew played out time to record a convincing win.

Such a victory for the hosts appeared unlikely in the game?s opening stages, as Plunkett's began strongly and only some glaring misses from their forwards prevented them from finding the net in the opening fifteen minutes. Brigid's luck ran out on eighteen minutes, however, as Terry Corby struck home for the visitors to finally reflect their pressure on the scoreboard.

Niall Nugent finally opened the home team's account with point on twenty minutes, before the teams swapped scores to leave two points between the teams with moments of the first half remaining (0-2 to 1-1). But it was in those dying seconds of the first-half that the tide turned in the hosts' favour, as Eoin Gahan pointed after a fantastic run and Pat Kiely blasted to the net to leave Brigid's ahead at the short-whistle.

The Russell Park outfit continued in a similar dominant vein after the restart, and scores from Niall Nugent and Dan McDermott sandwiched Kennedy's goal to leave Brigid's 2-5 to 1-1 up with fifteen minutes remaining. They could have been further clear, but Chris Lynam struck the outside of the Plunkett's post after being put through by Kennedy. To their credit, Plunkett's refused to lie down, and registered a brace of scores to leave five points between the teams as the contest entered its dying stages.

But it was too little too late, and the Brigid's defence stood firm to play out time and hand the Russell Park side a deserved win.
