Junior Hurlers defeat Croabh Ciaran to progress to Championship Semi-Final - Tue, 6 Sep 2005

Well done to the Junior Hurlers who defeated Croabh Ciaran to qualify for the Championship Semi-Finals. Paul Carter was the star of the show scoring 1-1 but also creating many scores as well.

St Brigids 3-12 Croabh Ciaran 3-5

A late goal from Eoin Kennedy ended the resistance of a gallant Craobh Chiarain outfit in this Junior Hurling Championship quarter-final clash at Russell Park. The Donnycarney men had trailed by eleven points five minutes into the second half on Saturday evening, but produced a fantastic recovery to close the gap to just four points with three minutes remaining.

However, up popped Kennedy for Brigid's, as the substitute netted after a goalmouth scramble to end the game as a contest. But the hosts laid the groundwork for the win in a half-an-hour spell between the fifth and 35th minutes of contest, during which time they outscored their opponents by 2-10 to 1-0.

The visitors started the brighter to race into an early 0-3 to 0-1 lead, but Brigid?s rallied and immediately hit back with four points of their own in a twenty-minute spell, with Plunkett leading the charge by claiming three fantastic points. However, just as Brigid?s were beginning to look extremely comfortable, Craobh claimed a goal completely out of the blue to put them 1-3 to 0-5 up with five minutes of the first half to play.

But to their credit, the Russell Park boys responded in kind with 2-2 before the short-whistle, as Kidd and Carter netted to hand Brigid?s a 2-7 to 1-3 half-time lead. And the hosts continued in that same vein in the opening stages of the second half and, as the likes of Seamus Lynam dominated in midfield, they struck four points in a three-minute spell to move 2-11 to 1-3 clear.

Craobh now looked dead and buried, but responded incredibly by hitting an unanswered 2-1 in the ensuing ten minutes, although they were aided by some sloppy Brigid?s defending. A David Brooks point stopped the rot for Brigid?s, and that score handed his team a visible lift whilst also deflating Craobh, as the Saints regained the look of assurance they?d displayed for most of the contest.

Chiarains managed to close the gap to four points through a point with three minutes remaining, but the aspirations of the Donnycarney men were dashed in injury-time, as Kennedy struck to put his team seven points up (3-12 to 3-5). With the game now over as a contest, Brigid?s played out time thereafter to record a well-deserved win.
