U15 Hurlers edge out Cuala in 6 Goal Thriller - Wed, 7 Sep 2005

St Brigids 2-15 Cuala 4-8

This was a classic game of hurling. Cuala playing mainly for pride at this stage in the season have always made things difficult for Brigid's and when they met in the championship earlier this year it took a replay before Brigid's got through. This time, the result was just as close.

The match started well for Brigid's with Jamie Winters scoring the opener from a fifty. Points by Niall Myron, Eoin O'Brien and a goal from Brendan Roche followed. Everything was going according to plan for Brigid's and Philip Carroll, Daire Plunkett and Alan McCarrick were all on the scoresheet by half time. Brigid's looked like they were heading for an easy win.

But then, in a blistering 2 minute period of play just before half time Cuala far from being defeated scored two fine goals. This put them ahead by 2-5 to 1-6 at the interval. Brigid's were shell shocked at half time and with Cuala coming out determined to avenge their championship defeat everything was set for an enthralling 2nd half.

Three quick points for Brigid's opened the scoring with Paul Clerkin, Philip Carroll and Daire Plunkett claiming the credit.

Two in response from Cuala saw Cuala retain a 1 point advantage. Then a point from Daire Plunkett and another goal from Cuala saw them edge ahead by three points and for the next five minutes Brigid?s heads were inclined to drop. It has been a long season and Cuala were not paying any heed to Brigid's unbeaten status.

This Brigid's team is made of strong stuff however and they gradually began to claw themselves back into the game. Another point from Daire Plunkett started the revival and then 3 superb points for far out on the left wing by Paul Clerkin (ably assisted by Dillon Casey) calmed the Brigid's nerves.  Brigid's had now edged back in front by just a point.

A fourth goal from Cuala shattered the revival. Cuala were now ahead by two points. The Brigid's defence hadn't been this porous all year and Brigid's spirits were starting to fade

Then a final attack up-field led to a long range goal from Philip Carroll  which bounced in off the uneven surface. Cuala responded again with a point. The teams were level and it was now deep into injury time. Was this going to be another draw, As the whistle beckoned Daire Plunkett scored the final score of the game and the match went to Brigid's by the narrowest of margins.

One game left, two points to spare over nearest challengers Ballyboden and the final game scheduled or next week.

Scorers:  Daire Plunkett 0-5, Brendan Roche (1-0) Paul Clerkin (0-1)Philip Carroll (1-1) Alan McCarrick (0-1) Eoin O Brien (0-1) Jamie Winters (0-1) Niall Myron (0-1)
