Junior 8 Footballers Continue Fine Run of Form - Wed, 14 Sep 2005 St Brigids 2-11 Na Fianna 0-2
The Junior 8 footballers of St. Brigid's easily brushed aside the challenge of an extremely lacklustre Na Fianna outfit at Russell Park last Saturday. The hosts led by 2-5 to 0-2 at the half-time interval of this League clash, and cruised home in the second half to annihilate their Mobhi Road Road opponents by a massive fifteen points. Top performers for Brigid's on the night were the forward pair of Stephen Quigley and David Smith, who claimed 2-5 from play between them and tormented the Na Fianna defence throughout. But the Russell Park outfit were aided to a massive extent by a woefully inadequate performance from Na Fianna, who registered a succession of terrible wides and failed to score at all in the second half. Nevertheless, St. Brigid's could only go about their own business and did so from the outset, as Quigley, Smith and Keith Morris dissected the uprights to leave their team 0-3 to 0-0 up in the game's early stages. And Quigley put clear daylight between the teams on ten minutes, when he blasted to the top left corner of the Na Fianna net after being set up by Morris. Na Fianna registered their first score on twenty minutes, but normal service was resumed seconds later as Brian Kelly went on a superb solo run before passing to Smith who pointed, and the latter did further damage five minutes from the break by fisting home to leave Brigid's 2-4 to 0-1 ahead. The team's made the turn with the hosts 2-5 to 0-2 in command and the second half descended into something of a procession as Brigid's racked up the scores against their hapless opponents. Brian Kevlehan opened the scoring three minutes after the restart, and Quigley followed suit seconds later by dissecting the uprights to put eleven points between the sides (2-7 to 0-2). And with Kevlehan and Ian Craven dominating affairs in midfield, Brigid's continued to pin their opponents back and moved further clear through scores from Kevlehan and Morris. The game was long over as a contest, and Enda Brady and Morgan Fitzsimons rubbed further salt into Na Fianna's wounds in the dying minutes. Na Fianna spent the last five minutes of the contest in Brigid?s half but, in keeping with their performance, hit several terrible wides and the hosts eased to a fifteen point win. Scorers: S Quigley 1-3, D Smith 1-2, M Fitzsimons, K Morris 0-2 each, E Brady, S Kevlehan 0-1 each. St Brigids: D Brooks; P Brady, C Byrne, D Hanley; P O'Connor, B Kelly, B Farrell; S Kevlehan, I Craven; P Lowry, M Fitzsimons, D Smith; E Brady, K Morris, S Quigley. |
