U15 Footballers narrowly defeated in Big Championship Clash - Wed, 28 Sep 2005 Ballyboden 2-7 St Brigid's 1-9 What a match! This game had everything. A high level of skill from both teams, suspense, disputed decisions, penalties and heart stopping action from the throw in to the final whistle with the outcome in doubt to the very last. Ballyboden got off to a dream start with a goal in the first 5 minutes against the run of play. They followed this with a point before Cian Mullins struck a beautiful point to narrow the margin to three points. Two more points followed for Ballyboden but just as they seemed to be getting their noses in front a beautiful goal from Philip Carroll brought Brigid's to within 2 points. As the half wore on St Brigid's played themselves into the game and despite a strong wind were within 2 point at the interval following two lovely individual scores from Paul Clerkin. At the interval then it was 1-5 to Boden and 1-4 to St Brigid's and a cracker of a second half seemed likely.. With the strong wind behind them in the 2nd half St Brigid's scored first, a point from Cian Mullins. Two more points from Eoin O'Brien and Gavin McIntyre saw St Brigid's edge in front for the first time by the narrowest of margins. But just as things seemed to be turning St Brigid's way a Ballyboden attacker was brought down in the square for a penalty which Ballyboden sent to the net past Jamie Winters in the goal. This put Ballyboden 2 points ahead, another point brought the margin to 3 points and things began to look bleak for St Brigid's. They fought back bravely however, and Eoin O'Brien scored 3 points on the trot to bring them within a point despite a point from Ballyboden in reply. As Injury time beckoned St Brigid's threw everything into attack n search of an elusive equaliser. As the seconds ticked away St Brigid's had a good chance for a point was blocked down and when the whistle blew Ballyboden had gone through to the next round by the narrowest of margins on a score line of 2-7 to 1-9. For St Brigid's this was a tough blow but this young team has talent in buckets and players like Sean Murray, Eoin O'Brien and Alan McCarrick can look forward to many more championship outings.
