Senior Ladies Footballers bow out in Leinster Semi-Final - Wed, 12 Oct 2005

St Brigids 0-11 Killinerin 2-10

On a windy day down in Naomh Eanna GAA Club, Gorey, the St Brigid's Senior Ladies took to the field for what would be their last match of the season. They were up against the Wexford Champions Killinerin in the Leinster Championship semi final.
Killinerin opened the scoring with a point from play 5 minutes into the game. Both sides looking unsettled, Killinerin scored another 2 points before Brigid's Colleen Barrett scored a point resulting from a pass from Orla Brennan. Brigid's beginning to find their feet, a great high catch from Orla Brennan from the kickout resulted in another score for Brigid's from Mary Galvin. Meanwhile down the other end, Killinerin are awarded a free in front of goal and manage another score to separate the sides 0-4 to 0-2. Very strong wind blowing across the pitch carrying the ball in favour of Killinerin.

Brigid's answer with a lovely point from Aimee Molloy from just outside the square. At this point, it?s anyones game. Brigid's midfield supporting well, Captain Louise Keegan made a great run from midfield and took a chance on goal but was unlucky not to score. A few minutes later Colleen Barrett had another shot on goal only for the Killinerin goalkeeper to make another excellent save. Further points from Orla Brennan Barbara Kelly put Brigid's in front at half time by 2 points.

Second half would be the downfall for Brigid's as they were unable to get their flow going again following a string of incidents on the pitch. 2 minutes into this half Barbara Kelly clashed heads with a member of the opposition resulting in a nasty bang to the temple stopping play for a few minutes. Not long after Alison Kelly gets a hefty blow to the knee and is unable to continue and is carried from the field stopping play for a further 5 minutes. Trish Bruen comes on to replace her.

This unsettles Brigid's and they seemed to lose their concentration from here on in. Killinerin score a goal followed by a couple of points to go in front. Colleen Barrett manages to keep the torch lighting for Brigid?s with another 3 points in this half. Following a misunderstanding in the Brigids back line, Killinerin are lucky to score another goal. This is a devastating blow for Brigid's as the gap widens. Frantic attempts are made by Mary Galvin and Colleen Barrett to put the ball in the back of the net but both are saved by the killinerin Goalkeeper who had an outstanding game. As the clock ticked on Brigid's were unable to claw their way back into this Leinster Semi Final and as the final whistle sounded, the dream of reaching a Leinster Final was over for Brigid's.

It was an emotional time for all the girls who have worked so hard this year and were so unlucky on the day not come away with a win. Well done to all involved especially managers Ray Noonan, Eddie Murohy and Peter Noonan who have given up so much of their time. Also this would be the last game for captain and Dublin player Louise Keegan as she has moved to Galway. The very best to luck to Louise. Thanks to all our supporters who travelled to the game.
