U15 Footballers gain sweet revenge over Ballyboden - Thu, 13 Oct 2005
Ballyboden 0-11 St Brigid's 2-10 - Saints gain sweet revenge After a 1 point defeat in the championship these two table topping teams met just a fortnight later with league honours still at stake. Gerry McEntee's charges had a determined look about them and felt that their earlier defeat was unfortunate to put it mildly. Brigid's started the scoring with a strong wind behind them with a point from Gavin McIntyre. Ballyboden replied with 2 points one from a free before Gavin McIntyre, clearly on top form scored a fine goal to put St Brigid's ahead 4 points to 2. Two points from Boden and 4 more from Brigid's with Eoin O'Brien claiming 3 of them and Philip Carroll the 4th saw Brigid's ahead by 8 points to 4 with 5 minutes of the first half remaining. Two more points for Ballyboden, who are facing into a semi final in a weeks time and looking for a confidence boosting victory brought their scoring to an end for the first half. A final fisted point from Cian Mullins saw Brigid's go in at the interval 1-6 to 0-6 ahead. Facing into a strong wind of gale force proportions for the 2nd half many of the St Brigid's supporters feared a strong Boden comeback. The players hadn't read the script though and they began to dig deep. Boden came at them with everything but couldn't breach the Brigid's defence with McCarrick, Waters and Woodgate holding the line. Daire Plunkett began to make an impression at corner forward and Philip Carroll was in great form as he constantly teased the Boden defence and together with Gavin McCarrick hit the post once and had a point blank shot on goal stopped bravely by the Boden keeper. Cian Mullins and Ryan McEnerin were outstanding while Niall Myron and Sean Murray turned in fine performances. Boden opened the 2nd half scoring with a point. Philip Carroll and Eoin O'Brien replied to keep the lead at 4 points. Boden then had a purple patch and scored 3 points without reply bringing the lead back to a single point. The match was finely balanced at this stage and one felt that whoever scored next would get to the finishing post first. Cometh the day, cometh the man however and Philip Carroll broke through a succession of determined defenders to blast into the corner of the Boden net and put St Brigids ahead by 4 points with just minutes remaining. The last few minutes were hectic end to end stuff but Brigid's weren't going to let this one slip, Carroll got in for another point, Boden replied and Daire Plunkett finished the scoring with a fine point. The final score line was 2-10 to 11 points a margin of 5. Man of the match goes to the attacking duo of Philip Carroll and Gavin McIntyre who got the vital scores when they were needed most though it was great team performance overall.
