St Brigids stuttered through this first match of the league en route to a defeat about which they can have few complaints. Clearly not yet into the flow of league action they struggled to make any impact against a lively Cuala side who always seem to save their big performances for Brigids

Played on a bitterly cold afternoon in Russell Park Brigids Cuala had two points on the board before Brigid?s opened their scoring with a point from Philip Carroll. A fine goal from Cuala put them ahead and was the margin they held until the interval when they went in 1-5 to 0-5 ahead. Three Points in a row from Daire Plunkett (2 from frees) where the highlights of the half and his running at and through the Cuala defence continued right to the end.

Brigids started the 2nd half in more determined fashion and 2 more points for Daire Plunkett saw them narrow the gap to a single point. Cuala weren?t in any mood for throwing in the towel however, and they dug deep showing some excellent skills as they notched up a total of 4 points in the 2nd half 3 of them from frees.

For most of the last quarter Brigids had the Cuala goal under siege but a series of at least 6 wides in the blustery conditions meant that they made little inroads into the Cuala lead.In the finish the game ended in some controversy when the final whistle blew just as a Brigids goal, which would have been the equaliser, hit the net. This years league campaign is only cranking into gear and clearly this St Brigids team has some way to go if it is to repeat last years memorable league and championship double.

St Brigids: Conor Woodgate, Cathal Doyle, Eoin O'Brien, Sean Brady, Jeff Mullins, Jamie Winters, Alan Waters, Paul Clerkin, Alan McCarrick, Daire Plunkett, Niall Myron, Philip Carroll, Conor Brennan, Gavin McIntyre, Brendan Roche

Scorers: Daire Plunkett (0-5) Philip Carroll (0-2), Paul Clerkin (0-1), Alan McCarrick (0-1)
