U10 Camogie Team get League Campaign off to a Flyer - Mon, 17 Apr 2006

St. Brigids 9 Nh. Olaf 4

Saturday morning 1st of April saw the start of the 9 a-side U10 camogie league. St Brigids opposition were Nh. Olaf in Russell Park . The game started with Nh. Olaf  attacking from the throw in and yielding an early goal. St. Brigids midfield of Catherine Hegarty and Ciara Hayes then took control and played the ball into the forwards, Katie Nyhan, Elly Wilde and Niamh Kyne.

St. Bridgids opened their account with a goal from from Catherine Hegarty, after that St. Brigids never looked back as Aishling Tully, Katie Donnelly, Alana Moran and Aoife Breen stood firm and never allowed Nh. Olaf score again in the first half and lead 8-1 at half time including four goals from full forward Katie Nyhan.

The second half saw Nh. Olaf re-organised and came out stronger adding three more goals against St. Brigids one goal but could never claw back the large deficit. Anna Greville, Doireann O'Donoghue, Aoife O'Reilly, Aoife Sullivan came on to play their part in this fine victory of 9-4.

Playing on the pitch beside them was the u10 development squad drawn principally from those girls born in 1997, 1998 and even some young stars. To judge by the skills and spirit on display in this match St Brigids Camogie will continue to go from strength to strength as these girls come of age!
The first half was dominated by St Brigids and our mid field trio of Hannah Connelly, Megan Conway and Ciara Griffin ensured that Naomh Olafs could not get the ball to their forwards. The St Brigids forwards including Cara Courtney, Ellen Maher and Aoife Friars worked hard and were unlucky not to be rewarded for their efforts by a goal.

On the occasion the ball went to the St Brigids back line it was quickly dispatched away from goal by goal keeper Ciara Tully and her backs including Laura Brown, Lauren O'Reilly and Katie Blane. The second half was hotly contested and Naomh Olaf's kept our backs under pressure. The back line played with great strength bolstered by a mid field Ellen Maher who saw many a ball safely away from the goal mouth. Carolyn McCarthy stayed cool under pressure and saved three balls on the line in close succession and at the end only one goal was conceded by St Brigids for a final score of St Brigids 0 St Olafs 1. Great subs came on as needed Sophia, Aoibhinn Moran played as forward and midfield while our youngest stars Kate Elliot, Mikaela Griffin and Maeve O'Regan all got stuck in protecting the goal.

Congratulations to all the girls involved .
