U12 Boys Footballers Capture Sean Farrelly Cup - Wed, 21 Jun 2006
Ballyboughall 1-4 St. Brigids 4-9 St. Brigids under 12 footballers travelled to Ballyboughall last Saturday for this league match. The match also doubled as the highlight of the local club's Annual Open Day, with the Sean Farrelly Cup up for grabs. In glorious sunshine, Ballyboughall started brightly and, cheered on by a large crowd, opened up an early 1-1 to no score lead. Things were not looking good for St. Brigids, who were missing a number of important players due to holidays and injuries. However, they showed their character and gradually got the measure of their opponents, as they started to pick off scores and reduce the deficit. St. Brigids then scored two goals in quick succession from Simon Dixon and Cian Ryan, and by half time led the home side by 2-4 to 1-3. After the break, the Brigids boys were determined not to let the home side back into the game. The defence - led by Dolan, Connolly and Greville - tightened up considerably, and Ballyboughall were restricted to a single point in the second half. Henry and Gaule at midfield exerted more and more influence on the game. Some fine flowing moves resulted in Luke Ryan, O' Doherty and Cian Ryan raising the white flag. Goals from Dixon and Mikey McDonnell stretched their lead further, and put the result beyond doubt. After the final whistle, captain Ben Griffith accepted the cup on behalf of his victorious teammates. St. Brigids: K. Cahill, S. Salmon, S. Somani, D. Greville, R. Connolly, C. Dolan, B. Griffith, D. Henry, C. Gaule, L. Ryan, C. Ryan, C. O'Doherty, S. Dixon, D. Burke, R. Murphy. Subs: M. McDonnell, C. Devlin. |
