Minor B Footballers advance to Champo Quarters with win over St Vincents - Wed, 30 Aug 2006

Minor C Football Championship

St. Vincents 2-07   St. Brigids 2-10

Brigids started brightly in this tense but lively encounter and took a two point lead inside the opening ten minutes. However, the home team pulled one back through their full forward. Brigids responded well when Morris Sweeney goaled from the edge of the square.

The game turned sour when the referee had to stop the game because of complaints he was receiving from both the line and the players. Having spoken to the Brigids manager, he resumed. The next bit of controversy came soon after when the referee disallowed a perfectly good Brigids goal for a square ball. Brigids had goalkeeper Damien Fitzsimons to thank for keeping their clean sheet intact after some magnificent saves. This seemed to rally Brigids who scored two more points before half-time to lead 1-05 to 0-03.

Brigids again started brightly and goaled within ten minutes of the restart when John Dalton finished off a great team move. Gavin Kane then tacked on a good score to put Brigids in a commanding position. But for all their possession Brigids simply couldn't kill off the opposition. Vincents then responded with a fortunate goal. A fourteen yard free dropped short and landed in the net with the aid of a deflection and a post.

Brigids seemed on the back foot, but some stern defending kept them clear. With the final whistle approaching and Brigids leading by five points, the referee awarded St. Vincents a penalty for a technical foul in the square. The Vincents midfielder scored to narrow the lead. But St. Brigids were not to be denied and a last minute free sealed their passage through to the next round.
