Junior B Footballers Advance to Champo Final defeating St Marks - Tue, 26 Sep 2006

Junior B Football Championship Semi-Final

St Brigid's 1-10 St Marks 1-9

St Brigid's Junior B Footballers under the stewardship of Noel Cassidy secured their place in the Championship Final following a one four point victory over St Marks. St Brigid's were the superior team throughout and the final score-line should have reflected a far greater gap with the Brigids dominating the majority of the play. Marks fought back well in the end & the referee gave them plenty of time playing eight minutes of additional time. The opening fifteen minutes of the game decided the outcome with St Brigids firing home 1-4 before St Marks got a chance to open their account. Paul Whitty was very much the man of the match contributing 1-4 to the St Brigids scoreline.

St Brigids who were missing several players from the offset with Willa Corbett & Paddy McAvenue injured, suffered another body blow when keeper Connolly had to pull out after the warm-up through injury. Stephen Moore stepped into the breach proving an ample stand in.

Paul Whitty opened the scoring with a superb point from a sideline ball from the far twenty one yard line. Fred Lynam playing in his new role of full forward added another point after some neat interplay between Maurice Curran & Kevin Bonfil in midfield. Whitty was soon on the scoreboard again when firing to the net after some fine defensive play from the St Brigids forwards who never gave the St Marks keeper any chance to clear out after claiming a high ball. Whitty dispocessing the keeper & tapping the ball to the net soccer style with his left foot. Dave O'Connor further strengthened the Brigids lead with a well taken point from close range after fifteen minutes. Rory McGowan added another point after some fine work from Seamus Smith and Tony Hughes in defence. McGowan scoring the pick of the opening points, rifling over from the 45 yard line on the right wing. St Marks made several subsitutions at this point to rejig their current setup.

St Marks tried to pack out centre field but Kevin Bonfil & Paul Grealy continued to supply the Brigids forward line with ample possession. Marks opened their account after 21 minutes of play but St Brigids responded immediately with two quickfire points. Joe Cassidy firing over a free after the free-running Maurice Curran was dragged down when bearing down on goal. Whitty further extended the lead when turning his man inside out to point from the right corner. Marks narrowed the gaf to seven points with two well worked scores in the final minutes of the half.

Marks opened the second half on fire registering a point within twenty seconds of the throw-in. A goal soon followed after a miscued free was punched to the net after some confusion in the St Brigids defence. St Marks tails were up but St Brigids tagged on two quick points to snub out the St Marks comeback. Joe Cassidy pointing from the left wing after a great cross field pass from Brian Smyth. Man of the Match Paul Whitty registered his fourth point from play after Fred Lynam supplied Dave O'Connor who in turn hand passed to the on rushing Whitty to score from close range. With two minutes remaining of normal time, Marks trailed by five points. Marks cut the margin to four points entering injury time & were soon within one point after some dubious frees were awarded deep into injury time but St Brigids deservely held on and will now face Kilmacud Crokes or Man O' War in the Junior Championship Final scheduled to take pace on the weekend of October 7th/8th.
