Junior C Footballers reach Duffy Cup Final edging out Peregerines after Extra-Time - Wed, 2 May 2007
St Brigids 2-15 St Peregrines 2-10 St Brigids battled their way to a well-deserved win over St Peregrines to register a fine victory over local neighbours St Peregrines and reach the Duffy Cup Final. The match was a free flowing affair and all scores were hard earned. The Blakestown surface was very hard and all players ball-handling skills were tested to full effect. St Peregrines started the better of the two sides and looked the sharper side. St Peregrines may have dominated the opening quarter of the game but they failed to register a score. St Brigids were beginning to get to grips with the faster pace and their defence was acting well as a unit. The half back line was supporting their forwards at all times and this support soon yielded dividend as St Brigids registered the first score of the game. Brian Nugent soared high to win the ball within the crowded midfield battlefield. Nugent fed Gahan who fed Cowman with a beautiful cross-field ball. Cowman broke through two tackles and tapped the ball over the bar. This score lifted St Brigids and their forwards began to win the breaking ball from midfield. St Peregrines forward line was also proving very dangerous when supplied with quality ball. St Brigids keeper Makr Davies pulled off several point blank saves resulting from several high balls being pumped into the St Brigids full back line.
The St Brigids defence survived some scares but were soon back on top and feeding their forwards with quality ball. St Brigids notched up their second score of the game when Eoin Mulvihil pointed from close range. The point as a result of Brian Kevlehan dispossessing the St Peregrines centre forward and sprinting through the Peregrines defence to hand pass the ball to the on rushing Mulvihil. Cowman soon registered his second point of the game from a free, which was a result of James Carty being dragged down by the physical Peregrines defence. Brigids soon registered their first goal of the half when Noel Dooher was dragged down in the area. Nugent stepped up to slot home. Eoin Gahan added a further goal to edge Brigids at half time. St Brigids led by one at the break but both teams knew there wouldn't be much in the game in the end. The half time break done St Peregrines the world of good as they levelled the game within ten minutes of the restart. Peregrines were beginning to dominate midfield but stern defending from St Brigids kept the scores level. St Brigids were on the back foot but the introduction of corner forward Brendan Farrell and half forward Connall Moore revitalised the St Brigids forward line. McGenney & Mulvihil began winning the midfield battle and in the 7th minute of the half, St Brigids scored their first point of the second half. A beautiful score from James Carty, after some great work down the left wing from Gahan. St Brigids, Cowman tagged on another point within minutes and St Brigids were holding Peregerines to two points entering the final minutes but Peregrines were awarded a dubious penalty which they slotted home to lead entering injury time. The lads never gave up and levelled up matters through James Carty. The extra freshness added by the Brigids subs told as they raced ahead in Extra-Time and were not going to be denied a place in the Duffy Final versus St Thomas's next Monday at 8pm in Russell Park. A real team performance from all players involved and the squad are lucking forward to the next game vs Rosmini Gaels this Thursday. Well done to manager Donal Smyth. Keep up the good work.
