Intermediate Footballers draw with Olaf's in Champo - Replay on Sunday - Wed, 23 May 2007
St Brigids 1-9 Naomh Olaf's 0-12 St Brigids faced into this championship opener with 8 players injured and for long periods looked like making an early exit from this year Intermediate championship. The game was played on the magnificent all weather pitch at Russell Park in excellent but windy sunny conditions Playing into the wind in the first half Brigids started brightly with 2 point from Mick Cussens but were soon under pressure when Olaf's scored a fine goal from their kick out. Naomh Olaf's scored the next 3 points and were four points ahead before Brigids scored again with a point from John Cussens. His brother Mick scored 2 more and suddenly Brigids were back in the game and just a single point behind. For the next ten minutes up to half time Brigids seemed to tire and despite the efforts of Conor Clavin at mid field Naomh Olaf began to move ahead scoring 3 points without reply. At the interval Naomh Olaf went in 1-6 to 5 points ahead but the game was still wide open with neither side able to dominate. Despite Brigids having the wind behind them Olaf's opened the 2nd half scoring and 20 minutes of end to end football followed with the Brigids number 11 Mick Cussens scoring 4 points mainly from frees and Olaf's getting 3 in reply. As the last 10 minutes beckoned the pace of play intensified. There were several tense exchanges and a couple of yellow cards awarded. St Brigids were now 3 points behind and time was running out. The saints threw everything at the Naomh Olaf defence and forced a number of frees two of which were converted by Mick Cussens. Brigids fans hearts were in their mouths as Naomh Olafs went down the field towards Brigids goal but hit narrowly wide. In injury time with just seconds remaining and a single point between the teams Brigids won a free which the Naomh Olaf defenders disputed, this gained ten metres for the home team and up stepped Mick Cussens to convert yet again and force a rematch.
