U13 Footballers Capture Plate Victory over Naomh Barrog - Wed, 27 Jun 2007

St Brigids 5-10 Naomh Barróg 5-3

St. Brigids were victorious at a wet Páirc Barrog in the under 13 B Plate Final last Saturday. Despite the home side being a division above the Russell Park boys, this was a win which was far more comfortable than the final scoreline suggests. The home side started well and were first to find their range with an early score. However, Brigids responded well, and scores from Winters and Carolan put the visitors in front. It was to be a lead which they never surrendered.

Shortly afterwards, some super interplay involving McDonnell and Carolan resulted in another point from the latter. This was quickly followed by goals from Winters and O? Reilly as the Brigids boys hit a real purple patch. Henry and Greville at half-back were instigating much of these attacks to great effect. However, Brigids took their foot off the pedal and let the home team in for a soft goal and two quick points just before the break. At the half time whistle, the visitors led by 2-4 to 1-3.

A strong start to the second half was to be expected from the home side, who were well supported by a large crowd. However, it was the Brigids lads who upped the ante, and effectively killed off the game in a blistering 10 minute spell. Winters ? who was giving an exhibition at full forward ? chipped in with two quick goals and a point. Carolan also hit the back of the net and, Gaule put over the score of the game, with the ball passing through at least half-a-dozen pairs of Brigids hands in a superb flowing move.

By now, the visitors had extended their lead to the point where even their mentors were visibly relaxed. However, credit to the home side, who never gave up playing. In a nervy finish, Naomh Barróg raised the green flag no less than three times, and Cahill was called upon to make a couple of excellent saves. As the rain lashed down, the referee?s final whistle was a welcome relief and Brigids ran out deserved winners.
