Junior A Footballers defeat Scoil Ui Chonail in Top of The Table League Clash - Thu, 12 Jul 2007

St Brigids 1-10 Scoil Ui Chonail 1-7

St Brigids Junior A Footballers produced one of their gutsiest performances for some time as they defeated table toppers Scoil Ui Chonaill 1-10 to 1-7 in Tuesday's AFL Division 5 game in Clontarf. Played on the wonderfully maintained Scoil Ui Chonaill pitch, the game had a real championship feel to it as both sides began in determined fashion.

It was the Clontarf men who opening the scoring following some fine work from their wing-forward but within 60 seconds Paul Witty had slotted over the equalising score. One of the games two decisive moments then arrived just 10 minutes in when a free-flowing Brian Smyth was dragged down when clean through on goal.

The ever reliable Witty despatched the resultant penalty low into the corner to give the Saints a lead they would not relinquish. Spurred on by the Trojan work of Dessie Carolan and Paul Greening in the middle of the park the Russell Park men added three further scores from half-backs Cian O'Sullivan and Brian Smyth and from full-forward Stephen Moore. Scoil kept themselves in touch with three scores of their own leaving three points separating the sides at the interval.

It was the Dublin 15 men who were fastest out of the blocks in the second half as two brilliant team moves where converted by full forwards Willa Corrbett and Stephen Moore. By the 40th minute the Blanchardstown men had now opened up a six-point lead. The games second crucial moment soon followed when the Scoil Ui Chonaill full-back was dismissed for an off-the-ball incident.

As is often the case in sport, however, a sending off can often galvanise a team and Scoil found a renewed impetus when they were reduced to 14 men. Their response began to gather momentum as time ticked away and a fine team goal reduced Brigids lead to three. However, with the Saints full-back line, marshalled by Niall Ryan in fine form, Scoil couldn't close the gap any further. As the game reached its closing minutes it was Dessie Carolan and Colm Doyle who slotted over a point apiece to seal a deserved Brigids win.

St Brigids: Kevin O'Donovan, Tony Hughes, Niall Ryan, Phil Kelly, Cian O'Sullivan (0-1), Seamus Smyth, Brian Smith (0-1), Dessie Carolan (0-1), Paul Greening, Eoin O'Sullivan, Joe Cassidy, Colm Doyle (0-1), Willa Corrbett (0-2), Stephen Moore (0-2), Paul Witty (1-2)

Half Time: Scoil Ui Chonaill 0-4 St Brigids 1-4
