Ladies Footballers Progress to Champo Final defeating Parnells - Mon, 27 Aug 2007

St. Brigids 5-9 Parnells 4-6

St. Brigids and Parnells renewed old rivalries at Russell Park onWednesday night. These two teams met in the intermediate final in 2005,when St. Brigids came back from an 11 point defecit in the second half to win the title. Coleen Barrett opened the scoring for the home teamwith a point in the 5th minute which was quickly equalised by a freefrom Parnells. The game then swung in favour of the St. Brigids girls when full forward Rose Holland scored 2 goals in 2 minutes, the second following good inter-play between Barrett sisters Shona and Coleen.Colleen then went on to add 2 points to increase the lead to 8 points by the 16th minute.

Parnells came back with a point before Brigids centreforward Angie Fenton scored a long range point from play. Coleen Barrett was proving to be the most dangerous forward and earned her sidea penalty when she was dragged back when through on goal. Angie Fenton finished the ball to the net from the penalty and Rose Holland got apoint in the last minute of the first half to leave the half time score3-6 to 0-4 in favour of the home side. Aine Cullen and Orla Brennan replaced Angie Fenton and Roisin Ni Bhaoill early in the second half and Rose Holland completed a hat trick of goalsin the 6th minute. Parnells refused to buckle at this point and cameback with a well taken goal.

The Parnells centre forward was causing alot of problems for the St. Brigids defence right throughout the gameand was the focal point for most of their attacks. Coleen Barrett scored a point to steady the ship for the home side before Parnells were awarded a penalty which was finished to the net. This buoyed the awayside and they added another point to narrow the gap further. The Brigids girls appeared to have put the game beyond doubt 2 minutes later when a fantastic passing move by Orlan Brennan and Amy Molloy set up Colleeen Barrett in front of the goal and she finished brilliantly, giving the Parnells goal keeper no chance.

But yet again Parnells showed their determination by breaking down the field and scoring a goaljust a minute later. Rose Holland was put through by Shona Barrett fora point and Noelle Healy completed the scoring for St. Brigids with afine long range point. The entire team defended the lead admirablywith Orla Brennan assisting the backs with a fine block in the last minute and goal keeper Aoife Murray producing a brilliant save to keepthe Parnells forwards at bay. The last kick of the game was another Parnells penalty which was converted but it was just a consolation scoreat this point as St Brigids had done enough and ran out winners on ascoreline of 5-9 to 4-6.

The St. Brigids girls now move on to face Ballinteer St. Johns in the intermediate county final on Friday 7th September.
