St Brigids Junior A Footballers produced one of their gutsiest performances for some time as they defeated table toppers St Judes in Sunday's AFL Division 5 game in Tymon North. Played in blusterly conditions, the game had a real championship feel to it as both sides began in determined fashion.

Playing against a gale in the first half, it was the Dublin 15 men who were fastest out of the blocks as Paul Whitty slotted over from 35 yards out off his left. By the 10th minute the Blanchardstown men had now opened up a two-point lead with Willie O'Donnell striking off his laces to disect the posts. The lads were fighting hard for every ball as they knew a win in this game would set them well on the way to Intermediate football next year.

Judes began to get a fold-hold in the game by the 20th minute as Enda Sheedy showed for every ball at centre forward but Alan Hughes was giving him nothing easy. Sheedy definitely knew he was in a game as he had to contain with several hard hits. Judes registered their first point of the half with 22nd minutes gone and began to pile on the pressure as they knew they would have to play against the wind & up the hill in the 2nd half. Brigids suffered a blow just after Judes opened their account when midfielder Paul Greeney had to retire injured. Des Carolan was straight into the fold battling for every ball. The introduction of Dave O'Connor just before half time as to prove a decisive factor in the 2nd half. Two late frees gave Judes a one point lead at half time.

The lads soon levelled up the game when Paul Whitty pointed from the tightest of angles from the right wing. A beautiful ball from Mark Kehir opening up the Judes defence. Whitty & O'Connor where proving a handful with their off the ball running. Judes then had their period of pressure and edged ahead with 15 minutes remaining. They were winning the midfield battle as they moved their gaint full forward into midfield and Sheedy into full forward. Noel Cassidy then made a decisive decision to the outcome of the game. He moved Alan Hughes to midfield, Des Carolan to full back & Se Smith to centre back.

The tide soon began to turn as Paul Whitty found the target to edge the lads ahead with 10 minutes remaining. Joe Cassidy then added a free from the left wing. The pressure was beginning to show on Judes as they had two men sent off in the closing minutes. Whitty sealed the victory with another pointed free. Judes now have to face St Sylvesters in another crucial league game with a point seperating them in the league standing.

The lads have 4 league games left against Kilmacud Crokes, Ballinteer St Johns, St James Gaels & St Pats of Donabate. They will be all tough games but know that their fate lies in their hands if they win all their remaining games.
