Senior Hurlers Left Frustated in Champo Group Opener Against Kilmacud Crokes - Sun, 27 Apr 2008
St Brigids 3-12 Kilmacud Crokes 2-16 The Senior Hurlers left O'Toole Pk on Saturday evening asking themselves how they lost to Kilmcud Crokes in their Championship opener. Leading by four points with less than ten minutes to go, several key decisions by the referee totally turned this game. Jamie Winters opened the game with a monster point but Crokes were soon 2-2 to 0-1 after ten minutes. Brigids were soon back into the game when Keith Morris lofted over two points and Aodhan McInerney also chipped in with a point. Brendan McInerney then found the back on the net on two ocassions to leave the scores level 2-4 to 2-4. Crokes finished the half ahead by two points on a scoreline of 2-7 to 2-5 but the lads were content with the score considering they had given Crokes a 7 point head start. They raced out of the blocks in the 2nd half and were soon leading 3-9 to 2-9. Alan Nolan supplying the goal with a trade mark goal from a 20 metre free. Nolan soon added a point from 90 yards to push Brigids four points ahead. It was at this point that the referee turned on Brigids. Full back Sean O'Sullivan was penalised every time he went for a ball. Four free brought Crokes level but Brigids rallied again with points from Ciaran Kellet, Brian Smyth and Ian Sheedy to leave three behind them entering the last few minutes. Crokes kept plugging away soon leveled the match up with two frees and a point from Barry O'Rourke. In the final seconds of injury time, the referee awarded Crokes a free to their full forward. The referee said O'Sullivan was holding him(picture above of incident). It was the other way round, their full forward was holding O'Sullivan's hurl. It was a very disappointing end to a great game of hurling. The lads done so much considering they were missing four key-starters. It was great to see several minors graduating to Senior Hurling as well. |
