Junior A Footballers Lay Down Marker vs Clontarf Ahead of Champo Q-Final - Mon, 7 Jul 2008

St Brigids 2-10 Clontarf 0-11

Despite several key players missing, the Junior A Footballers put in a big performance to beat the previously unbeaten Clontarf in a great game of football. Several players were a bit ropey from the night before, no more than Brian Kelly who had a great game the previous day for Dublin Fingal in Parnell Pk.

The pitch held up well considering the amount of the rain that had fallen the previous few days. The lads started well playing up the hill. Mark McDaid opened his account with a beautifully lofted 45' yard free. Eoin Mulvihil chipped in with a point from the right wing. He was causing Clontarf big problems. Clontarf fought back and the game was soon level at 0-2 a piece.Neil Plunkett was then introduced for Brian Murphy and his extra pace in the full forward created several openings for the lads. Brian Kelly slotting over and Conor Hayes also added a point from centre forward. Clontarf changed their tactics at this point and narrowed Brigids lead to one point. Brigids countered this move by introducing Mark Hanley to pick up Clontarf's third midfielder.

Brigids led by one point at the break but knew Clontarf would not go down fighting. Ian Craven and Brian Kevlehan rolled back the years in midfield, breaking or catching all ball around them. Eoin Sullivan and Cian McCaffrey were immense in the full back line as was Conor Morris in full back. Brigids were full of confidence and extended their lead when Willie Tyrell fired over a sublime point from the right wing from the outside of his right boot. Mark McDaid extended Brigids lead with two brilliant frees from distance but Clontarf kept fighting and only trailed by two points with 15 minutes to go.

Damien Fitzsimons kept Brigids lead in tact as he made two brilliant saves to keep Brigids in the lead. Clontarf were piling forward but Mossy Sweeney stepped up for Brigids when moved to wing forward. He got 1-1 in the space of two minutes, driving a low goal off the greasy surface to the back of the net. Clontarf soon had a period of dominace and were level within 6 or 7 minutes but Brian Kelly strode forward from half back to score a goal which was soon followed up by two McDaid frees to seal victory. Keith O'Neill even came on and attempted to score a goal. What a sight!!

Well done to the lads who now look forward to their Championship Quarter-Final versus Raheny on Thursday week at 7.45pm in Russell Pk.
