Senior Footballers Get Out of Jail With Late Surge Against St Marys in League - Sun, 18 Oct 2009
St Brigids 2-11 St Marys 1-12 Our Senior Footballers got out of jail as they edged out St Marys in this crucial league encounter. With both teams down at the lower end of the league table, a win was a must for both. Trailing by 5 points entering the final 10 minutes, things looked bleak but the lads really pulled this game out of the fire bagging 1-4 in the final 10 minutes. Kevin Bonner scored both goals. His first goal (below) was a sublime effort scoring from the most acute angle.
The opening half was a very even affair with St Marys leading 1-5 to 1-4 at the break. Points from Mark Cahill(2) and Paddy Andrews had the lads leading 0-3 to 0-1 after 12 minutes but Marys hit a purple patch scoring 1-3 to lead 1-4 to 0-3 after 20 mins. Kevin Bonner narrowed the deficit to 1 point with his goal and another Mark Cahill free had the sides level. Marys got the last score of the half. Marys were the stronger side through out the 2nd half as they pushed forward at all times. Every time we scored, they would respond and soon edged ahead by 5 points with some good scoring from Blaine Kelly and former Laois county player Shane Cooke. With things not looking good, Gavin McIntyre and Paddy Andrews(2) narrowed the gap to two points entering the final 2 minutes of normal play. Andrews second point was a beauty off the inside of his right boot. With time running out, Declan Lally cut through the Marys defence to hand pass to the on rushing Kevin Bonner who plamed the ball to the net. Lally followed up with a fisted effort to seal the game. |
