Senior Footballers Find Extra Gear In Titantic Semi-Final Tussle with Ballymun Kickhams - Sun, 30 Oct 2011
St Brigids 1-18 Ballymun Kickhams 1-12 Well done to our Senior Footballers who advanced to the County Final after a cracking Semi-Final against Ballymun Kickhams. Things looked bleak in the opening half as Ballymun started very well and led 0-5 to 0-0 inside 15 minutes. The lads kept fighting though and eventually took the lead on 56 minutes after coming back from 6 points down at half time.Things didn't finish there though as the game went to extra time where the lads eventually found their stride and Philly Ryan sealed the game with a cracking individual goal. St Brigids set up a local derby in the final of the Evening Herald Dublin SFC final after overcoming Ballymun in extra-time of Saturday's titanic semi-final at Parnell Park. For a lot of the game extra-time did not look a likelihood as the Mun dominated the opening exchanges as the movement and understanding of their forward line had the Russell Park men chasing shadows. Inside the opening eight minutes Ballymun has moved 0-5 to 0-0 ahead as Kevin Leahy, Ted Furman and Derek Byrne were causing problems for the Brigid's full-back line. However, Brigid?s eventually began to secure some possession around centrefield and points from Ken Darcy (three, two frees) and John O?Loughlin looked to have given them a foothold. But with the energy of midfielder Davey Byrne driving them on Ballymun surged six points clear by the interval, 1-8 to 0-5, after Derek Byrne worked his way through on goal to blast past Shane Supple as the game moved into first half injury-time. Ballymun had almost goaled seven minutes previously but Supple pulled off an excellent save to deny Furman and then got back on his feet to put Derek Byrne under sufficient pressure to force a wide from close range.
The likes of Paddy Andrews and Philly Ryan began to made inroads against the Mun defence as Brigid's cut into the deficit - seven points without replay saw the Dublin 15 men edge into the lead 0-12 to 1-8 with only four minutes remaining. Ballymun then broke their second half duck with points frees from James Burke and Dean Rock - Rock's coming in the third minute of added time to move ahead by a point. However, just as Paul Curran's men looked set to reach the final Brigid's lauched one last attack which resulted in a debated free that Darcy converted to force extra-time. Ballymun started extra-time the more impressive with points from Derek Byrne and Rock but before it's conclusion it was all to unravel for them with Ted Furman and Davey Byrne both dismissed on double yellow cards in the second period of extra-time. By half-time in extra-time Brigid's had recovered to move 0-16 to 1-12 ahead with points from Darcy (two frees) and Paddy Andrews. Seven minutes into the second period Philly Ryan put the issue out of sight when he brilliantly manoeuvred his way past two defenders before applying a clinical finish and a minute later followed up with a point to give the final scoreline a misleading look at the end of a pulsating encounter. |
