Support for the Team in Thurles - Thu, 22 Jan 2004 The support for the team at the match from throughout the local community in Dublin 15 and from the wider Dublin GAA supporters was immense . It is estimated that St.Brigid's had close to 5,000 supporters in Thurles on Sunday. They all brought their own special colour and flavour to the game . The Santas, the Altar Boys the Cow Girls and the new St. Brigid's cheerleaders ensured a carnival atmosphere in Thurles both on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon . Red and White was the order of the day with a huge amount of flags , banners and hooters on display throughout , not to mention the now famous Bridgie 111 who enjoyed a safe return trip. Many of the Brigid's fans made a weekend of it with all accommodation within a 15 mile radius of Thurles completely booked out for weeks. The Anner Hotel was the focal point of the festivities with scenes of much merriment into the wee hours of the morning, while Thurles Golf Club played host to a tournament for some of the older Brigid's supporters on Saturday morning. The Club organised a train which was quickly dubbed " The Santa Express" and which was a complete sell out, It carried over 300 excited supporters from Dublin in comfort to the game avoiding all the traffic en route. In the immediate aftermath of the game it is easy to be critical but everyone should take heart that this year for the first time Brigid's won the Dublin senior Championship and they went onto Leinster Championship for the first time ever. It is now 11 years since any Dublin team won the All-Ireland so it is not exactly an easy task. The team is young and with an immense flow of talent coming through the juvenile ranks the future looks bright. This year for example St. Brigid's is fielding 3 Minor Football teams building on last year's U16 Championship winning team . With exciting plans on the horizon for developing the Club's facilities , and a thriving nursery section the future of St. Brigid's GAA looks bright and red. Here's to Bridgie 1V and a successful defence of the Dublin title. Community Voice March 2004 Dermot Wooodgate |
