St Brigids Dominate Blue Stars Team - Sat, 22 May 2004

It was quite an achievement for local club St Brigid?s to pick up 9 Blue-Star awards in the year of 2003. The Footballers received 7 Blue Stars Awards after winning the County Championship and the Leinster Title. The Hurlers received 2 Blue Stars Awards after reaching the County Final.

The annual Bluestars awards is an event designed to reward club players who have excelled throughout the year. Once a year a match is played in both hurling and football between the Dublin Senior teams and the Bluestars. it?s fair to say that few in Dublin would begrudge any of the awards received by all 30 of the Blue Stars in each code. The crowd that gathered in Naomh Mearnogs? grounds in Portmarnock where the games were hosted this year was quite sizeable and were clearly eagerly anticipating the coming year of Championship action after last year?s disappointment of early exits for both the footballers and hurlers of Dublin Several players caught the eye especially Willie Bourke in goals for the Dublin Hurling Selection. He showed great authority and commitment; this could also be said for the "Dublin Football of the Year" Mick Galvin. No matter the occasion, Mick will always get stuck in. The Hurling game finished on a score-line of 17 points to 1-10 in favour of the Dubs. Shane Ryan showed his talents with the 'small ball' when he hit four points to help Dublin to victory. The Dubs took control in the second half after they had led by the minimum - 0-6 to 0-5 - at half time. Quite an array of young talent was on show for the hurlers and the future looks bright, maybe this year the Dubs can finally win the U21 title that has just eluded them for the past two years. The football game was a much tighter affair than the hurling game. The Dubs won a score-line of 2-13 to 2-12. The game was keenly contested and Tomas Quinn stood out until being forced off injured. Raymie Gallagher won any ball fed into the full forward resulting in three 3 fine points. Naomh Mearnog must be congratulated on their fine running of the event. Well done to all who represented St Brigids who are all looking forward to the semi-final against An Ghealtacht February 22nd in Thurles.
