St Brigids Dubs Hoping to play a Key Role in the New Regime - Fri, 4 Feb 2005

Brigids Dubs Hope to play Key Role in New Regime

As the Winter solstice ends and a new year begins a lot of our local Senior teams are in the throes of a heavy winter training programme. None more so than the Dublin Senior footballers who have been put on rigorous weights programme under the new regime of Paul 'Pillar' Caffrey.

The 'Pillar' is no stranger to Dublin 15 (having managed St Peregrines 2 years ago). He also guided Na Fianna to two county final victories over St Brigids. (He?ll be hoping to extend that run even further with a win over the new Offaly Senior Football supremo, Kevin Kilmurray who was the Brigid's manager in both those County Finals on April 3rd when the Dubs travel to Tullamore.)

Dublin 15 should be well represented in the Navy and Blue this summer with no fewer than 10 locals from  the current Senior and U21 panels being given their chance in recent challenge games. St Brigids 2004 Leinster Senior Club Champions lead the way with 5 players. The experienced Peadar Andrews and Barry Cahill were joined last year by the promising Declan Lally. Johnny Noonan, who has led Brigids U-21's to the Dublin County final , played in Pillars first game in charge vs Louth in Parnell Park in January.

Johnny who was the Dublin U-21 free taker when they won the All Ireland 2 years ago could be the answer to the Dubs perennial search for a dead ball expert. Dabhach Dineen who is also a key member of the Brigids U-21 county finalists and has been playing midfield for the U-21's in the recent O'Byrne cup games and is another who could yet be seen on the bigger stage. This would bring the clubs representation to 5 which would be a record. Others that could force themselves into the fold could include the Cahill brothers (Martin and Declan) who both wore the Arnotts jersey under the Lyons reign. James Brogan and Oran McCann are both on the Under 21 panel also.

St Oliver Plunketts good league form has seen Bernard Brogan (younger brother of Alan ) and Gareth Nesty Smith also join the panel  where they'll be in good company with their Red and White neighbours. Ciaran McGuinness from Peregrine's and Senan Connell make up the Dublin 15 top 10. The first League game will be a new departure for Dublin GAA as it will be held under the new floodlights in Parnell Park on Sat Feb 5th and with the Dubs renewed focus on the league there should be plenty of opportunity to see our local lads in action over the coming winter months. With a new regime and hopefully a bit of luck lets hope we get to see a Cup or two around Dublin 15 this summer.

Dublin Home League games:

  • Feb Sat 5th V Mayo (under lights)
  • March 12th/13th v Westmeath
  • March 19th/20th v Donegal
