Mick Furlong Captains Dublin Junior's to New York Championship Win - Sun, 27 Aug 2006

Congrats to Mick Furlong & Fergal Mulvanney who won the New York Junior Football Championship. Both are living in New York for the past few years but served St Brigids with great distinction before heading stateside. Mick Furlong, a great servant to the Junior 1's captained the team to their Championship win.

New York Junior B Championship Final

Dublin 1-12 Cavan 1-10

With the lead changing hands on no fewer than five occasions and the teams tied six times and as late as the 55th minute, Dublin pulled out all the stops to take the John Joe McGovern title in New York this week. Their were led to the championship by Vinnie Collins who was spectacular with six points from frees and play. Their defence held Cavan to four scores in the second half and the cup was heading back to the Heritage on McLean for the ceremonial filling.

It was a credit to the B division and although we had one moment when players got to familier it took nothing from an exciting and demanding game. In our first final of the year Cavan and Dublin stormed into battle with all guns blaring. With no holds barred in a hard hitting contest the first six points were evenly distributed with Mark Ruane tapping over two frees from distance for Dublin while Andrew Hayes was taking the placed balls for Cavan. Dessie Reilly had a chance to break the game open when he was set free on the right wing be Hayes but Alan O'Reilly made a good foot save to avert the danger. Reilly was the victim of a heavy foul on the neck shortly there after and Andrew Hayes popped the free over to move Cavan ahead.

It was a final that both wanted to win and the heavy hitting did not slow down as both teams gave as good as they got. But their was nothing malicious just desire. Dublin had their best period of the half at this point and they had four of the next five scores as they surged ahead. Vinnie Collins had three points with one of them a huge blast from play. He was linking well with Peter Dornan who was a hand full for the defense when he received the ball.

Cavan did level the game before the half with two points from Andrew Hayes again who was now coming into the game a little more. With the score 7-up at the half it was still a roaring contest. Andrew Hayes was alive to open the half as Cavan decided to utilize his full range of skills. He was a county U21 for Meath. He pointed a free and set up a chance that floated wide but was getting involved point guard style. Mark Ruane drove a fifty between the posts for Dublin but Cavan answered when Ciaran Brady had a huge rob of Vinnie Collins and he pointed from possession. Hayes added from play and they had a two point lead. It looked like the Wicklow Mountains in the distance in a game that had been so tight to this point for Dublin.

The game went ten minutes without a score as the Cavan defence did not allow any clear cut chances but Dublin headed out the road to Baltinglass and started to ascend the hill with great resolve and scores from Vinnie Collins and Fergal Mulvanney made it level. The sky blues then got the goal that could take a title when a long free from Mark Ruane was punched to the net by Mike McDonald his midfield partner. Cavan did reply with a vengeance and Brian Denneghy was fouled in the square for a penalty which Andrew Hayes drove low to the net. It was the last score of the game for Cavan however as

Dublin finished the strongest with the go ahead score coming from man of the match Vinnie Collins when he made space for himself and Ronan Creaney tapped over the final score from play to put two between the sides as the final whistle blew and the John Joe McGovern Memorial cup went to Dublin for the first time.

Vinnie Collins was the star but Mick Furlong who accepted the cup for Dublin did well at the back with Alan OReilly, Keith Murray, and Liam Briodie. Mark Ruane won tons of ball and his three points came at critical junctions. Fergal Mulvanney got about, with Ronan Creaney doing the Irish Voice proud. Peter Dornan also did a lot of spade work. Kevin Shalvey, Ciaran Brady who was close to the man of the match award himself, Shane Smith, Andrew Hayes who loves to take on responsibility and Braian Denneghy of the bench (his father Vincent played for New York in the Gael Linn triumph of 83) were Cavan's best.
