Junior B Footballers Advance to Champo Semi-Final defeating St Maurs - Thu, 7 Sep 2006

Junior B Football Championship Quarter-Final

St Brigid's 1-9 St Maurs 0-8

St Brigid's junior footballers secured their place in the Championship semi-final following a convincing four point victory over St Maurs last Sunday morning. Brigid's were the superior team throughout and the final score-line should have reflected a far greater gap with the Saints dominating the passage of play in all sectors of the field throughout both halves. Paul Whitty secured the first point for Brigids from a placed ball after just ninety seconds of play.

Strong blustery conditions prevented both sides from registering further scores. Maurs levelled the game with their first score after ten minutes but Brigids pulled away following a goal from Fred Lynam who was in superb form for the Russell Park outfit. Whitty further strengthened the Saints lead with a well taken point from close range nearing half-time. The saints led by three at the interval on a score-line of 1-3 to 0-3.

Paul Greally opened the scoring for the Dublin 15 men following a strong passage of play just after the re-start. Whitty added another to leave Noel Cassidy's men five points ahead of the opposition. Maurs kept themselves in the game with two points in quick succession. A further wide for Brigids put their scoring on hold momentarily until Dave O'Connor slotted over for the Saints following a superb pass from Joe Cassidy who was resolute throughout for the red and white brigade. Substitutes Seamus Smith and Will Corbett made their presence felt on the pitch and refreshed the game mid-way through the second period.

A point from a free for the opposition left just three between the sides nearing full-time. A well finished point from Brigid's Greally kept them in front and Dave O'Connor was man of the match for the homeside side when he secured two final points from play for the Russell Park side. The Brigid's men led by a margin of four points on the final whistle and deservedly march on to the semi-final stages of the junior Championship where they will meet St Marks on September 22nd / 23rd.
