Junior B Footballers Gain Valuable Victory in Push for Intermediate Football - Wed, 25 Oct 2006

St Brigids 4-6 Naomh Olaf 2-5

Two clinically taken first half goals from St Brigid's assassin-like full forward line helped pave the way for Noel Cassidy's troops as they defeated a strong Naomh Olaf side in the Phoenix Park. The home side's intensions were clear from the outset and points from their pacy attackers Dave O'Connor and Joe Cassidy were just reward for a sustained period of early pressure.

With Paul Greaney and the impressive Kevin Bonfil beginning to dominate midfield, the pressure on the Olaf's defence continued to mount and when Eoin Sullivan's threaded pass sent O'Connor clear, the young corner forward finished emphatically to the net. The Castleknock outfit continued to wreak havoc and when Greaney's long range effort came off the under-side of the crossbar, Mossy Curran was on hand to blast home. A well taken Paddy Mc Avenue score left the Saints in control, 2-3 to 0-1 at the break.

Olaf's began the second half brightly cutting back the deficit to a manageable 6 points and when their towering full forward crashed home only 3 points separated the sides. There was little respite for the Brigid's defence and timely interventions from full backs Niall Ryan, John Duffy and Tony Hughes prevented further damage.

The game was on a knife edge at 2-3 to 1-4. However, points from O'Connor and Curran along with a well taken goal from Mc Avenue helped null the Olaf's on-slaught. Both sides continued to trade scores and a further Olaf's goal ensured an exciting finish to proceedings. As time ran out, the visitors threw caution to the wind and without defiant last gasp blocks from stand-in keeper Stephen Moore and the tireless Brian Smyth the result could have been in doubt.  However, a stunning injury time point from Joe Cassidy, supplied by the energetic Seamus Smith coupled with another O'Connor goal ensured that the points went to the Russell Park outfit.
